NXEC are offering flat fare advance purchase tickets to "almost anywhere" on the NXEC routes for £9 each way with a voucher. I took a look and they seem to be a fair few available to Edinburgh so a trip may be needed. You have to book before midnight on Tue 5th May.

Yeah, they're avail for journeys between 1st June and 26th July. Very few from Newcastle to London tho' - the first I could find was on 11th June and only at 7am.
No probs going to Inverness and back on almost any date, though.

There seems to be lots for weekday afternoons.
But if you have 3 children and a family railcard it's not such a good deal!
