NYMR Diesel Gala - 14, 15 & 16 June 2024

We had an annual ticket last year (bought when it was £40, prior to the raise to £45 but my point still stands) - we may have gone twice per year if we just had to pay on the day, but because it was unlimited visits we went back 8 times.
So they lost £40 in ticket revenue (assuming that it would be £40/visit), however they gained at least an additional £5 for car parking, approx £5 pp on a tea & bacon sandwich, £3 pp for a coffee later in the day

If you look at price per track mile it totally alters the price issue, makes it one of the cheapest.

I'm not surprised that people are complaining about the price of a ticket, from our experience of the SVR gala last weekend (our first diesel gala), some of them can't even afford a bar of soap...

The DPS have said:

50009 has been withdrawn from the NYMR gala due to the gradient profile pulling out of Grosmont Station. We felt it was best not to put the power unit under anymore pressure until we resolve the issue as it is a steep climb for the locomotive to do

It is on thier Facebook and I am unable to link for some reason! I am really sad the Deltic has been withdrawn but if it has failed a fitness test it is better not to risk it.

( it does seem fit enough to continue working on the Nene Valley for a while longer- an easier and flatter run )

EDIT: DPS press release

During the event at the Nene Valley Railway, 55009 masquerading as long-lost classmate 55013, suffered a complete failure of power unit 451. With the condition of Power Unit 408, the downrated unit, the decision was made to withdraw the locomotive from the NYMR Diesel Gala, our contact there was very supportive of our decision. With the locomotive down to one engine and the condition of that engine, the group feel that it would not be able to perform to anything like an acceptable standard on such a steeply graded line.

On the Saturday morning, the duty fitter prepared the locomotive, with 451 being the unit to work the day. There were no signs of issues and when the driver arrived, the engine was run up and the locomotive tested, and all was well. During the second trip with the freight train, the driver noticed the engine hunting when moving the power handle from the On notch to Off whilst performing the runaround at Peterborough Nene Valley Station. The decision was quickly taken to shut this power unit down and switch over to the other. The loco then performed adequately for the rest of the day.

On the Sunday morning the fitter inspected 451 and bled the fuel system as there appeared to be an air lock. Once this was completed, the engine was started, and the hunting was worse than before. When the driver arrived for the day, there was one last attempt to start the power unit, which resulted in a very strange sound, with the generator turning but the engine did not rotate.

The group will now take the locomotive back to Barrow Hill and, in time, arrange for the power unit to be removed for assessment. We can only hope that the damage is minimal, but as you can appreciate, the chance of this is remote. The group will endeavour to return the locomotive to traffic as soon as possible, although as there are no power units ready this is likely to be more than 12 months.

Very sad news but a sensible decision in the circumstances.

Still has its original power units upon withdrawal.
They have spent more time in preservation than in BR service, which is good going.
Hope all is well though, these things are not easily replaced if something really goes wrong (à la 55 016), although the DPS do have back-ups, but not many. Think the last break in to the crown jewels was for a new genny for 55 015)

The timetable has been issued and 37418 will now visit the line in place of 55009 Alcydion.

UPDATE: No. 37418 ‘An Comunn Gaidhealach’ will now be a guest locomotive during the Diesel Gala from 14th to 16th June 2024 replacing Deltic No. 55009 ‘Alycidon’.

I know this will be an unusual request but can anyone offer an ID for the shuttle bus operating between Grosmont and Whitby on the Saturday of the diesel gala, please?

Thank you in anticipation of any assistance

First one on its way from Burton

Presumably tomorrows move is from the East Lancs

Both have a decent wait at Batterby to allow crossing with the Whitby to Hexham service

Ah ok thanks

The gala seems really busy today trains full, platform at Grosmont packed when trains come in so people are still prepared to pay. Where is 37508 on display if indeed it is? If not what was the reason for bringing it?
37264 looks superb in it's new repaint.

It's been repainted back into one of it's previous liveries of Railfreight large logo grey so has been renumbered to match.
