Severe disruption to VTEC and XC services from Newcastle to Edinburgh as a result of OHLE damage in the Reston area.

Several XC services have terminated at Newcastle and 4 extra voyagers are being stabled at Tyne Yard tonight compared to normal and one of the HST's 1S51 being turned back at Berwick will also be stabled at Tyne Yard according to Tyrell.

VTEC are attempting to run services but already 1S24 all stations sso has been turned back at Berwick and is heading back to Newcastle despite being a HST to run via Carlisle. If this happens the sets original allocated working will be +6hrs late reaching EDB! From my observations the set was +1hr30 when it left Newcastle calling at Morpeth, Alnmouth, Berwick, Dunbar EDB vice the following XC and EC services as was the plan. Network Rail Glasgow do think however they can implement SLW soon. This saw Newcastle with unusually 2 Edinburgh bound Voyagers 1S52 and 1S53 on 10 and 12 with a terminator on 11 filling up the southbound bays.

1G30 is running from Newcastle as a mk4 vice the 1E30 ABD-LDS HST but will for obvious reasons be diverted via Doncaster. 1E30 is still stranded at Edinburgh with both XC and SR reporting problems procuring coaches to run vice trains.

To add to this, ASR, FKTPE, VWC, VTEC and AXC services will be subject to 50mph speed restrictions north of Preston on the WCML and north of Newcastle on the ECML (although the ECML has engineering work taking place) as a result of high winds and heavy rain from 2200 Friday 4th until 1200 Sunday 6th December. In addition other lines in the area are limited to 40mph.

update 23:30 on Tyrell:-

OHLE staff report up line at Reston is now available for SLW, so movement of trains will now take place. Services will be severely delayed as a result however, and coaches have been ordered for delayed 1E30 pax to take then through from Newcastle to DHM, DAR, NTR, YRK and LDS but that service still hasnt left EDB yet (est journey time 2hrs, it was due off NCL @22:46 putting it into NCL +3hrs late)

Ouch! Arrive Amazing(ly tired and angry)

In all seriousness, it's a while since the North ECML has had a do like this, and OLE repairs aren't easy I'm this weather! I feel sorry for all the folk stuck, and the people trying to get them home ... The incident happened at a bad time of day, with both Up and Down Anglo Scots trains affected (later in the day their service is thinner and it tends to be the last few Downs at risk).

It'll be interesting to see how quickly normal working can resume, given the potential for high winds to hinder repairs.

To be fair, it's not their fault. All they can do is try and keep for moving and make it up to them as best as possible.

I would expect the above for PIDD best practice if nothing else.

Regards 1S51, it appears to have detrained at Berwick and is now heading back to Newcastle as 5S51.

There are scheduled ECML closures this weekend which may actually help matters. Means they can concentrate on train movements and not so much on OHLE repair

1S24 eventually arrived aberdeen 7 hours late according to tyrell. Realtrains suggest at 429 late it fot only as far as montrose

1E30 terminated Newcastle 388 late with pax forward on 1Y03 which was a late start from Newcastle (05:15 vice 04:45)

Set from 1E30 forming 1S01 15 min late start while HST is refuelled at Heaton.

EC63 has unfortunately had toilets on board vandalised, no doubt some idiot the previous night disgruntled at the delay took matters into their own hands

Was planning on doing the VTEC diverts across the Tyne Valley today but thought better of it for fear of being stranded in Carlisle!

Given the weather forecast for the next 24 hours that is probably a smart move on your part.

There is disruption on the tyne balley due to flooding. 1E05 is 1h50 down.

11.30 aberdeen still on the platform at Newcastle (at 12:00 when I left) with edinburgh service looking like a cancellation.

GC 180 set just passed me (on 1E05) northbound at Bradbury. Unusual to be on ECML so must be a set swap or a diversion

Thats good to see. Extra capacity on the sunderland/middlesbrough-york route is desparately needed, especially the amount of binge drinking day trippers that frequent those saturday morning trains. The MBR-MIA often look like a nightclub at chucking out time when the train disgorges its ****ed up passengers at york! The evening trains back are a nightmare to work.

I find it embarassing having to leave genuine passengers behind at Yarm because the train is rammed to the rafters with drunken p1ssheads arguing and fighting over who has the reservations or taking up first class seats while chucking empty bottles and cans out of the train doors onto the platform. And this is at 10am! In 45 minutes from leaving middlesbrough to getting into york enough alcohol has been consumed to drink a corner shop dry. Lord knows what chaos they cause in York!

Those left behind often have to travel via thornaby and darlington as most of the morning trains are the same, with the ex Newcastle's making special stops at thirsk to pick up the folks unable to board there. This often means advance purchase tickets and connections get missed, while revenue is all but abandoned meaning many of those on board get to travel for free. Hardly fair is it?

I wonder if they wiped their hands well after taking matters into their own hands in the toilet area......:D

I see humour in the strangest things on this website.

Eww!!!

Mind I have witnessed far worse. People urinating against drivers cab door....

amorous couples getting jiggy on the toilet while the bowl has been overflowing....

People continuing to urinate in an obviously overflowing toilet and not bothering to report it, but instead stand in the flood on the floor and add more urine and other toilet gubbins to the waterfall of hot dog flavoured water.....

Staff hitting the super reverse flush button in order to clear a blockage and not putting the toilet lid down first.... Or standing back........

Lines are down around Berwick, according to VTEC, with flooding at Carlisle... What have they done to upset the bearded one upstairs so much?

You'd think the bearded one upstairs would give the bearded one down here a bit of a break!

Today an object on the OHLE at scremerston is challenging VTEC services. Single line working Berwick to Belford. With VWC and TPE passengers using VTEC services there are some very busy services going north and south and across the pennines.

Several XC services have terminated at Newcastle and 4 extra voyagers are being stabled at Tyne Yard tonight compared to normal and one of the HST's 1S51 being turned back at Berwick will also be stabled at Tyne Yard according to Tyrell.
140 passengers alighted from 1S51 12:25 Plymouth - Edinburgh at Alnmouth and put on a railtour bound for Linlithgow (1Z40 from Lincoln) in order to get to Edinburgh (via Newcastle and Carlisle), interestingly. It's only rarely that you hear of a railtour coming to the aid of stranded passengers in times of disruption (such as "Tornado" rescuing passengers at London Victoria during snow in December 2009).

What about the Western that dragged in the HST a few years ago? Now that was fun to read about

The parents of a colleague were on that train. Arrived back at Linlithgow at 0325 only 243 minutes late!!!!!

he said they went to Berwick, got stuck, went back to Newcastle, picked up more passengers ( with tour passengers moved into FC) then ran via Carlisle to get to Edinburgh!

Reports are that all passengers were well looked after! Nice to see some cooperation in the face of adversity. The SPRS website has a rialtour report:

SPRS: The Christmas Cracker to Lincoln was a nine-coach train top-and-tailed by West Coast Railways 47 802 and 57 313. As in previous years the tour was organised jointly with North East Railtours. Mince pies and mulled wine were served to all passengers before arrival at Lincoln. The bright and sunny weather was ideal for passengers who had over four hours to visit the historic city and its famous Christmas Markets. Christmas Dinner was served on the return journey.
The train ran close to time until reaching Berwick on the return journey. Extremely stormy weather north of Berwick had resulted in the wires being brought down and the line was blocked. Arrangements were made to convey passengers who had boarded at Drem by taxi from Berwick. The train then headed back south, picking up 150 passengers from a stranded Cross-Country service at Alnmouth. After a long detour via Newcastle and Carlisle the train eventually reached Edinburgh four hours late, where transport arrangements had been made for those who did not have cars. The train then returned to Linlithgow. In the extreme weather conditions this was better than for some service trains which were delayed by over seven hours and thanks are due to West Coast Railways for their efforts to alleviate the problems. It was a marathon experience for the SRPS vounteers, many of whom were up for more than 24 hours. Both SRPS Railtours passengers and Cross-Country passengers accepted the situation very cheerily and the buffets did a brisk trade.

This completed an eventful year which has nevertheless proved very successful for SRPS Railtours.

(My bold)

I've used SRPS a few times for tours and they've always struck me as an excellent operation. Glad to see that even in adversity that shone through from them!

Wonder if they charged XC for conveying their passengers ;)
