The Hythe Pier train (which counts as a passenger train not a tourist train as it serves a genuine transport purpose - getting customers to and from the ferry) has locomotives dating back to the first world war, and is in daily use, I believe. Not sure of the ages of the carriages, though

The Berner Oberland Bahn has...
Goods stock is a varied collection, much of which would not be out of place in a museum. The earliest wagon shown on the BOB stock list dates from 1888 and was rebuilt by the BOB in 1990. After 102 years that, I suppose, is the least they could do! The collection of goods stock totals over 30 assorted wagons, most pre-First World War, many built by SIG
(from Wiki)

Their sister route the SPB has...
5 SLM 1894 1894- Class H2/3, 0-4-2T, Steam.
11 Wilderswil SLM / BBC 1914 1914- All electric locomotives, Class He2/2
12 (Gsteigwiler) SLM/BBC 1914 1914-
13 Matten SLM/BBC 1914 1914-
14 (Gündlischwand) SLM/BBC 1914 1914-
15 SLM/Alioth 1910 1964-92 originally WAB 55, 1992 back to WAB as shunter Lauterbrunnen, 1997 monument in Münchenstein BL (former Alioth factory)
16 Anemone SLM/Alioth 1910 1964- originally WAB 56
17 SLM/Alioth 1910 1964-96 originally WAB 57, withdrawn 1996
18 (Krokus)
Gündlischwand SLM/Alioth 1910 1964- originally WAB 58
19 Flühbluhme SLM/Alioth 1911 1964- originally WAB 59
20 (Edelweiss)
Gsteigwiler SLM/Alioth 1911 1970- originally WAB 60
21
61
Enzian SLM/Alioth 1912 1970-81
1991 Rebuilt 1992
62 Alpenrose SLM/Alioth 1912 1989- Rebuilt 1989
63 (Silberdistel) SLM/Alioth 1912 1996- Rebuilt 1996

So their newest locos (which are in daily passenger service) date from 1914

Realistically though, it's the A stock on the met line.

Well the oldest stock still in use on the UK mainline has to be the PEP stock ie the 313s/314s/315s/507/508s since they came out in the mid 70s.

Relatedly, does anyone know what the oldest mainline-registered vehicle currently is?

I imagine there is some departmental stock dating to the 50s, not to mention the cl20s, I wouldn't be surprised if the odd pre-nationalisation wagon was still in some sort of use. As for steam, are there any pre-grouping locos registered?

It could be the Class 121 used by Chiltern, it's not on a designated heritage railway so it must count as a passenger service; other than that maybe the odd steam train or the class 483s used on the Isle of Wight.

Is the 1938 Class 483 former LU Northern Line stock the oldest rolling stock still in regular passenger use in the UK?

Nope. Coaches 1-5 on the Tal-y-Llyn narrow gauge railway in Wales are older. These coaches were built in 1866-67 and have been in continuous use ever since.

Then again, you could, if you want, construct arguments against their claim. However, the original question makes no mention of "mainline" or "standard gauge", so to try and undermine their claim would just be acting the spoilsport. What I want to know is whether any other stock (irrespective of gauge and ownership) can beat these coaches in terms of longevity in service.

Lol, strange thing to say, jumping straight to diesel traction to be the oldest form, when you have a proper loco in your display pic, and not to mention the name

As for pre-grouping locos, is City of Truro still mainline registered, because that would probably wipe the floor with any diesel?

The oldest passenger stock that can run on the mainline is some of the queen of scots stock as some are over 100 year old i think

Whilst I agree about the LU 1938 stock, your geography is a bit lacking.

The Class 483 (a.k.a. 1938 stock) is operated by the Island Line, on th Isle of Wight.

I hadn't noticed anything in the press lately stating that the IoW had succeeded from the Union, so the Isle of Wight STILL is part of the United Kingdom! :) :) :)

Why couldn't they have used 1949 or 1956 stock on Island Line? Surely it would have been more cost effective to use newer trains with therefore less maintenance than to use older trains?

Then again, actual availability of the stock is another thing.

The one train stock everyone is forgetting, although they have recently been re - engined is the HST's which some do date from 1976, if you are talking about mainline must be amongst the oldest?

I see your point, and raise you the Class 37s (1960-65) - they're still a pretty common sight.

If you arent counting the IOW 483 and the self contained 1st gen DMU's then the oldest mainline stock in everday (or night use) will be 9800 which was formerly 5752, MkIIE built 1972 and still used as a seating car on the caledonian sleeper. Next would be the former prototype HST trailers again built 1972, none retaining their as built layouts
