I see the BBC have a leading article that says we should set aside the idea that Omicron is more mild because of one death. I mean...really? Come on.

I haven't seen any information about that one death, but it was announced as with, not from.

All this talk of imminent lockdown. There is absolutely no reason whatsoever for yet another wreckless damaging lockdown!!! The government can't put us through one yet again. Many people won't be able to cope this happening again. The government have absolutely over reacted as it is, implementing this Plan B nonsense.

I seem to remember a thing called Nightingale hospitals, which was one of the very few sensible things this government actually did right back at the start of all this.

Just a shame that the strict lockdowns meant that the £millions spent on the Nightingale Hospitals mostly went unused.

Like others, I'm now at a point with restrictions that I'll obey the "rules" as little as I can get away with without making my life more difficult. The Omicron variant seems to be more infectious but less deadly than previous strains, so increasing restrictions will be counterproductive in the long run. This variant is basically nature's vaccine for all but the most clinically vulnerable.

I note that today the first recorded UK death associated with the Omicron variant has been announced. Given that this variant has now been circulating for a number of weeks, and that any death within 28 days of a positive test is still recorded as a Covid death, the panic over this latest variant is utterly overblown.

I absolutely agree, the panic and hysteria over this variant is utterly overblown. It just defies belief, it really does.

100,000 bookings in a day shouldn't be a problem. Given that we are giving about 400,000 doses per day, assuming the number of open bookings is fairly constant, the system must have been averaging around four times that per day for the last few weeks.

The problem is probably that everyone tried booking at once - maybe I should have said Johnson has sent the country into Corporal Jones mode. I went to pick up my prescription this morning, stacks of people outside, all except me waiting for their jabs, some ridiculously early, while I was there the phone was regularly ringing; from what they were saying all sessions booked for the week. Its only a 'one shop' pharmacy, very little room inside, no more than four staff there.

Assuming that is true, Johnson should have kept his bl@@dy mouth shut until he knew the facts/ was happy to reveal them. My mother died a couple of years ago at the age of 96, they wrote stuff on the death certificate but her body was just worn out; it sounds like for this person it might have been the straw ... It might just as easily been a flu or heavy cold that caused it.

This one was with rather than from, so actually no deaths from Omicron have been publicly confirmed anywhere.

My annual diabetes review has just been cancelled by my GP due to covid jab rollout. I say it's annual but it's already four months late and I've been told they hope to rebook it at some point in the new year.

Fortunately my condition is stable so it's not the end of the world but it does show that unless it's covid any other medical conditions are not a priority.

For those who say let's lockdown and do everything to avoid the harm of covid what about those who suffer preventable harm from other conditions?

My granny was a similar age when she finally went. Apparently she climbed in to bed (during the day) and simply stopped breathing a few minutes later. No attempt to rush her to hospital to keep her alive. If she'd caught Covid would she have been carted off to hospital?

It's one of those statements that is technically true but also highly misleading.

Hospitalisations and deaths *with* Omicron will increase quite rapidly because it is indeed spreading rapidly and lots of people are going to be exposed to it. However, hospitalisations and deaths *from* may or may not, and the related question is how much hospitalisations and deaths *from* *the other variants* go down.

Indeed, it's a disgrace. Seems like he's drumming up support for more restrictions or even a lockdown. When he replaced Hancock as health secretary I was quite pleased and thought he'd be far better than his predecessor. But my opinion of him has changed now over the past couples of weeks with all the panic and hysteria he's causing and bringing back these blasted restrictions again.

Did I miss something, why the sudden rush to get LFT kits today ? The only mention of tests in the PMs annoucement yesterday was a reminder that the NHS Covid Pass will be needed in some venues from Wednesday. That was announced several days ago.

There's the fact they've announced that 10 day isolation (which I believe is currently in place for anyone who isn't vaccinated, plus anyone who is a close contact of the omicron variant regardless of vaccination status) can be replaced by daily testing using LFTs for 7 days as of this week (I think it may be Tuesday but can't remember). If you are a couple or a larger household, then that can very quickly add up to a large number of tests needed!

I tend to ignore calls from people I don't know as well. The one exception is if I am expecting a call.
