Going back to London 2012, according to t’internet the artists who performed at the opening & closing ceremonies, including Sir Paul McCartney, were paid the grand sum of £1.00 each. Apparently this small amount was to make their contracts legally binding.

I think regarding Celine Dion, she was singing an Edith Piaf song. It would be completely different if she'd sang one of her own songs, especially an English language one.
Would there be French singers who could have sang on the tower - undoubtedly. Would the global audience have recognised them as easily as they do Celine Dion? Absolutely not

The opening ceremony has been truly awful.

Indeed, we turned over to Lake District Rescue on Channel 4, way more entertaining.

I could not help but compare the opening ceremony to London 2012, and not favourably....

I know they have limited rights but there's too much studio coverage and not enough sport being shown.

Yes, far too much talking and not enough actual sport.

I must admit I didn’t know it was Lady Gaga singing until the commentator said afterwards. I actually thought it was a French singer. So having a well known singer was wasted on me (and the wife who’s more up to date on these things than me).

Note: The rumours on the internet say that Celine Dion sang live but Lady Gaga mimed.

Yes it would be like having an Australian singer here.
Can't understand why there is so much discussion here about the choice of Celine Dion. For the record I am definitely no fan of hers but she undoubtedly has a good singing voice for such occasions despite her ongoing condition. Also, there is no other french speaking singer currently with a suitable profile in France for such an event, (Mirielle Mathieu is now 78) and her following.spreads right down to millenials. Idoubt that the french population in general would even be questioning why she was chosen to sing at the opening ceremony.

The BBC's limited rights is started to show through I think. Numerous puff pieces on Tom Daley and Adam Peaty, rather than show live sport. The £3.99 cost of Discovery/Eurosport might be worth every penny

It also looked like they had banked on Peaty winning gold last night and had yet another montage ready to go, instead we had Balding trying to fill the airtime with "it's not the winning that matters".

Absolute total bargain, would have paid way more for this! Mind you if Premiership football was played on my lawn I'd close the curtains and they want £££'s/month! They just concentrate on the sport, no fillers, no montages, no interviews with the bronze medallist's milkman - just as it should be. Plus as I've mentioned you can often shut off the commentary.

Just watched us win the mountain biking, I'm exhausted just watching!! So much on it's hard to know where to start, the Guardian has a page where everything can be followed, it's "live" so you can flick around and see what events are exciting/near ending etc; I'm finding the official Paris one slow to load and difficult to navigate. Guardian = https://www.theguardian.com/sport/olympic-games-2024

Tom Pidcock just retained the Mountain Biking Gold.
What a race that was. Even better to hear the totally unsporting French boo’s as Tom crossed the finishing line.

Bbc1 showing highlights of an earlier woman's rugby 7s match and the BBC stream showing a live rugby 7s match.

Really can't see the logic on holding a swim in the Seine through Paris. A bit like swimming in the Thames through London. With all the boat traffic I wouldn't fancy it.
I don't get it either - it seems a big risk for the organisers to take that it would be fine.

Some guests are genuinely insightful about their sport which helps, especially when it is a sport that doesn't get much coverage but others are just filler and a waste of time. I do feel the BBC do focus too much on chat instead of sport.

Watching the Olympics was great fun to me, but not sure I'm a subscription sign up and cancel committed.

I rather suspect the normal boat traffic will be prohibited for the event. The microbes on the other hand ...

The rain that they had Friday and Sat will have washed some amount of crap (in some cases, literally) into tributaries and the Seine itself. I would not fancy swimming in it one bit

I was in Paris in mid March. After the winter & spring rains the Seine river level was so high that most pleasure boats couldn't operate as they couldn't get under the bridges. It was thought that it would be late May before all was hopefully back to normal. It wouldn't take much rain to wash more crud off the land into the river.

Just two incredible performances this morning by the GB triathlete and women's 4's in rowing, won the rowing on the very last stroke! Terrific Tuesday followed by Wonderful Wednesday!

How on earth Alex Yee came back to win in the Triathlon is unbelievable. He was nowhere near the Gold medal & was being challenged by the Frenchman in third but somehow found the energy to win the medal.

GB also won a Bronze in women’s synchronised diving & a silver in BMX.

In Swimming Katie Ledecky won her 1500m freestyle title again by a huge margin & Leon Marchand delighted the crowd by winning a gold medal.

I wonder how many tests they did before they came up with a test clear?
Just old me being cynical :)

Had to laugh the other day when replying to a clean River Seine a guest on Jeremy Vine‘s R2 show said “define clean”.

A few more medals for GB today in Rowing. Simone Biles of USA took the Gymnastics all around final.

There was controversy in the Boxing as an Algerian who had been disqualified under gender eligibility rules won against an Italian who quit after 46 seconds.

Andy Murray’s Tennis career has ended after he & Dan Evans lost in straight sets to an American duo.

This is just magnificent. Didn't even know trampolining was an Olympic sport, let alone having someone that could win it! So including the horse fence-jumping, that's 9, puts us ahead of France and our down under cousins on Golds. Might be at least another one tonight in the hump-back bridge riding!
