Thanks.

I'll be leaving home before 7am so time will be pretty limited so I'll try to ask on the way. I have to be at Fenchurch Street by 08:08 from Croydon then I'm pushing it LOL

Well it's coming up ....

Scotland Weekender with SWMBO and our lass ....

I'll be writing up the loose plans tonight and it'll be uploaded on the blog in the morning.

I'll put a few questions on it too, in case anyone can help

Nice ones Paul.

Maybe you could start your own thread so as not to confuse people.

Morning folks,

https://wp.me/s6uhrb-glasgow

What is the best place on Glasgow Central station to spot/photo from (platform) ?
Is Queen Street worth any time to spot ?
What is at Eastfield depot now (is it still there)?
What will I see between GLQ and EDB?
What stock will be on the fast trains between GLQ and EDB ?

Thanks in advance for any answers

Morning folks,

1. What is the best place on Glasgow Central station to spot/photo from (platform) ?
2. Is Queen Street worth any time to spot ?
3. What is at Eastfield depot now (is it still there)?
4. What will I see between GLQ and EDB?
5. What stock will be on the fast trains between GLQ and EDB ?

Thanks in advance for any answers

5. On the fast GLQ-EDB services you will be riding the Class 385. (Assuming you mean via Falkirk High)

3. Yes, Eastfield Depot is still there, but I don't know what is there. I would, as a guess, 385's, 170's, 158's and 156's would at least be there.

2. You get: 385, 156, 158, and 170, and maybe some more but I wouldn't know.

Platform 5/6 is best if I remember rightly. Longest platforms so offer the best views. It’s still a bit of a stretch to get numbers on the extremities though.

Queen Street is a mess at the moment, and not actually all that busy in relative terms. 43s, 156s, 158s, 170s and 385s. Possibly the odd 380 but they’ve all but been replaced by the 385s now. It’s ok, but I’d rather go out to Hyndland and get a good number of EMUs ticked off there instead.

Eastfield depot is home to the aforementioned stock working in/out of Queen Street. You can ID some stuff on the nearest roads to the mainline from a passing service, but the stuff at the back is not going to be identifiable.

Between GLQ and EDB it’s just nice scenery on the left and random countryside on the right. As you get to Edinburgh there’s Haymarket depot on the left, which is home to the DMU stock and the HSTs. That’s about it.

You’ll be on 385s. Usually a seven car set, unless things have gone amiss and a single unit turns up.

Thanks.

Platform 5/6 looks like the best then.

385 unis ... oh well I can pretend I'm on 47/7 and DBSO ... ;) Oh for the old days

Platforms 9/10 is where I based myself during my time at Glasgow Central back in December. Very long platforms and allows you to ID everything (using coach numbers on some units that head into P14/15) and will give you a chance to get some good snaps of pretty much everything that comes and goes.

Bear in mind that you are expected to sign in and out at the Network Rail reception on the concourse (it's up a little stairway that isn't all that obvious) but it's a simple process made even easier by the very helpful staff and the pass they give you will ensure that you are left to get on with it.

I spent a couple of hours at Central in the morning before repeats started. I then ventured to the low level and jumped on a train to Hyndland which is well worth a visit for an hour or 2. I also found Queen Street to be ok for the hour or so I was there but not sure what's going on there at the moment....might be worth it if you want to see one of the shortened HST sets.

Can't help with the Edinburgh side of things as I only did a day in Glasgow so I'll be looking to your time there as a guide for how I should plan my day there whenever that may be

All four day's of haulage and sighting of my trip (with SWMBO and daughter) are now posted.

Now I have the taste for Scotland (well the whiskey) again I am thinking a flight to Inverness and trips to Thurso, Wick, Kyle and Glen Ord distillery for sometime in the future.

I have a few other loose trip plans for 2019 but all are subject to money, time, SWMBO, and being fitted around the loft conversion and kitchen and bathroom refubs.

Hope you enjoy the Scotland 2019 reports.

Either a flight or a trip on the Cally Sleeper to Inverness which gives a reasonable connection (~ +18) into the first Kyle train. Inverness airport station is due to open next year I think

Thanks mate,

SWMBO isn't keen on the sleeper (although my and the daughter are) so we may end up flying depending on costs.

I didn't realise Inverness Airport had closed.

The airport is still there, just that it's meant to be getting a station to save having to use a bus into Inverness

Sounds like Scotland was enjoyable mate and it definitely did your book of sights some good.

Enjoyed your little post taking us back to 1987 as well
