I need to travel from A to D, changing trains at B and C and returning the same day.

Ideally, I would catch the 09:29 from A to B , but this is 1 minute before the validity of an off-peak day return.

I plan to instead depart from station B ( at 9:50 ), returning to A later in the day.

Can I use an off-peak day return from A-D for this, even though I could not have made the first leg of the journey with it?

Yes that’s fine as long as break of journey is permitted (which it should be [?]).

It’s not like anyone would know anyways!

From what I can tell it would be valid since the restriction code JC allows break of journey and just has the general restriction "Not valid on trains timed to depart after 04:29 and before 09:30"
