Hi if I want to get the sleeper down on a Friday (23rd) in Sept is it likely to be too late to get a single cabin?- also do you have to book in person at Paddington or can I try at any national rail station. Thx

Don't know how busy it will be, but any station can book the tickets (although some staff may not be familar with the process).

I wouldn't leave it until the day to get a berth as, particularly on Friday, the berths will probably all be full (unless we're in the darkest depths of winter). But this far out I would be stunned if all the berths were sold yet. So a trip to a local ticket office should see you sorted out though, as greatkingrat suggests, they may not be familiar with the process!

Is there any way of checking availability online?

You can check availability of public berths online via GWR website but Priv packages can only be checked for at stations. I suspect the quota for priv on a Friday night 4 weeks away will have sold out so the other option is priv ticket & berth supplement at public rate (or travel in day coach if you don't like sleep ! )

Update : Just had a quick look and currently at least 10 single cabins available that night. :D
