No urgency to have both routes energised by December 2014 as only enough 319s will be available for one.

They will need greater pity when the rail is extended through the tunnel to Wetherby and Cross Gates as is proposed locally

I don't want to go off on another thread but there are four options ranging from demolition of a couple of properties and not serving any villages to about ten properties if each village of Collingham, Bardsey, Thorner, Scholes and Penda's Way is to have a station again. It depends on how much each village wants their station back. Wetherby-Leeds journey time target non stop of 17 minutes diesel or 16 minutes if electrified. 85% of the original trackbed is still unoccupied.
Harrogate/Wetherby-Tadcaster-Church Fenton no demolition required as proposed route is property-free.
A business case study is expected this year to include Northallerton-Ripon-Harrogate also.

From experience of the Lime St-Warrington BQ service, the approach control for the junction at Earlestown from the west is painful.
You come to a near stand west of Sankey Viaduct, before crawling over it and then through the extended junction crossovers.
This bit is in the process of being resignalled, so it will be interesting to see if this improves.

Will still be approach released from red due to the speed difference, it won't be any better.

Yes to all locations but stations at Spofforth, Wetherby Racecourse and Tadcaster will have to be relocated due to old sites being built over. 2000 houses are planned close to the former Thorp Arch station and 7,000 are planned in East Leeds between Whinmoor and Scholes. This is the catalyst to reinstate from Cross Gates to Scholes with an A64 Park&Ride and turnround station there for £17m to ease west end bay platforms congestion by again using through platforms and shorter dwell times at Leeds. Extension to Wetherby can be done in affordable stages as villages decide if they want a station or not. Thorner can definitely have a station without demolition of property with off line new build, but if Bardsey wants a station it will mean demolition of a handful of properties to maintain a 90 mph route close to Bardsey old station. The new route will have to tunnel through the ridge carrying the A659 Collingham-Harewood road to avoid former Collingham Bridge station site housing estate crossing the river Wharfe twice before crossing again adjacent to Wetherby Golf Course where the original route will be taken to Wetherby station.

Harrogate-Horsforth-Leeds services would return to Harrogate via Wetherby as in a tear drop and vice versa without the need to turnround in Leeds. Aire Valley electrics could turnround by travelling to Wetherby, Church Fenton then back to Leeds and Aire Valley. This replaces the East Leeds proposed P&R shuttle to Micklefield with Scholes, replaces proposed additional bay platform 0 at Leeds by using through platforms and providing a regular service to the proposed new Yorkshire airport at the former RAF Church Fenton adjacent to Church Fenton station.

On some curves fitted with checkrails there are greasers fitted to the check rail. They do the same job but ease the passage of the back of the flange instead.
Crimple Curve on the Leeds - Harrogate line did have 2 sets of Check rail greasers fitted to both the Up and Down lines along with normal rail greasers fitted to the high rails on each line.
If you were on the track there you almost surely came off covered in the stuff.
Mind you without the greasers you needed ear defenders every time a pacer went past.

This is my local line. I have used it since coming to Yorkshire in 1966. Again. I know the flange lubricators are there but must look closer next time as I assumed it was attached to the running rail. Possibly fitted to check rails after introduction of Pacers in 1984. Never too old to learn something new. Pacer flange squeal here is painful even with lubricators. You can see passengers holding their heads to reduce high frequency decibel assault on sensitive ear membranes.

It would be interesting indeed if reopening of the line could be the catalyst for further new homes. I'm very familiar with the lines concerned, living and working locally.

It would also be interesting if the National Library at Boston Spa would generate more journeys, were the line to be re-opened.

IIRC, the Library was not built when the line was closed in 1964.

Indeed, the library was a 1990s thing.... however the library doesn't get a bus service beyond 3 or 4 morning services and ditto on an afternoon.

I seem to recall an all day service was trialled, but I may be wrong. Half hourly route 770/771 go within a 7 minute walk though.

However, if it were possible, a rail connection at Tadcaster might shift part of the distribution of beer from road to rail, which would be quite useful to residents.

Original route out of the question for three reasons.
1. Trackbed development.
2. Curvature.
3. Tadcaster Town Council objection to noise of trains.

Chosen route is curving to the west with new bridge over the A64 and keeping west until joining original solum south of Stutton.

When the railway station at Thorpe Arch was first constructed, it carried the name of "Thorpe Arch for Boston Spa", as both those two settlements were intended to be served by it. Boston Spa is situated on the west bank of the River Wharfe.

I am fairly surprised that the line between York and Scarborough only has 3 stations including Scarborough. I think Northern Rail should run a 'shuttle' class 153 or 155 between Scarborough and York and make a few more stations along the line such as York (existing station), Haxby (the station could be next to the A1237), Strensall, Kirkham, Malton (already existing), Rillington, Yedingham, Sherburn, Seamer (Existing station) and Scarborough (Existing station).

However the new alignment of the A1(M) directly to the south of Wetherby does cut through the line and this would be a major engineering issue to bridge as the carriageway is very wide and it crosses at an angle. The alignment is also heavily built on in Wetherby by houses.

Also re-instate the line between Scarborough and Saltburn calling at Scalby, Cloughton, Staintondale, Ravenscar, Robin Hoods Bay, Hawkser, Whitby West Cliff, Runswick, Staithes, Skinningrove and Saltburn.

New Elland railway station to be a reality after Network Rail reveal plans

A rail station for Elland is a step closer after a major boost by Network Rail and Calderdale Council.

And if the bid goes well it could be open and running by 2019/20.

Station plans for Elland form part of a five year £38bn funding boost for rail network nationally.

Last night Calderdale Cabinet agreed to put £75,000 towards preparatory work to build the case for a new station for the town.

The next step is to identify a location, with the Lowfields Business Park the key contender.

Clr Barry Collins, Calderdale deputy leader, said: “The fact is Elland should have had a station in 2000 because the business case for Elland was as good as Brighouse which got a station and is working fantastically.

“This time we have to make sure Elland becomes a reality.”

He said they were having to embark on a complex process known as a GRIP and they were at stage four of eight stages.

Besides a whole host of other reasons a major viaduct would be required between Skinningrove and Staithes which would make this project immensely expensive. It could never happen, unless the consortium who want to develop the potash resource off the Whitby coast were refused planning permission for their underground pipeline to Boulby Mine, and they had to reinstate a railway track.

The trackbed in Wetherby is built on, and the A1M cuts through it. A new alignment would be needed.

Yes. I agree that this is the case. But the buildings and the A1(M) which were in situ when the Google Image was taken are still there today as they have not been knocked down. So it doesn't change that the alignment in Wetherby is no longer viable, at least towards Tadcaster.

Is there any purpose in opening to Tadcaster as it is a rather long way round and Tadcaster is served with a good bus service to Leeds ?. The only disadvantage is that the bus terminates at the bus station which is a good walk away from Leeds railway station, though during the day there is a half hourly service passing Cross Gates station.

If the line is re-opened then there would probably be a park and ride station at Scholes adjacent to the A64. The bus to Leeds would pass this.
