Hi
This is my first post so please ignore if something is quite obvious :)

I have booked a offpeak return ticket from London to glasgow(27th aug ontwards and 29th aug return - weekend and bank holiday).

While returing on 29th can I go from Glasgow to ediburgh early morning, break for 8-10 hours and then catch the evening train from edinburgh to london?

Since break journey is allowed on off peak tickets and valid on any routes hopefully it should be fine, but just wanted to check with rail gurus :)

Thanks
Vin

Yes you'll be fine doing that - although your ticket is unlikely to work any barriers in Edinburgh so you'll need to go to the manned gate :)

Yes, that's valid.

Break of journey is not permitted on the outward part of a London-Glasgow SVR, but it is on the return (which you'll be using). (For info - the restriction code for your journey is 5F, 9F for journeys to King's Cross, which restricts you to trains arriving at or after 1117 on weekdays).

Also, it's a common (ish) misconception that you must resume travel on the day you break your journey - this is not the case and you could perfectly validly stay overnight or longer in Edinburgh, as long as you return within the month's validity.

Out of interest, why have you booked this ticket so far in advance? There's no advantage in doing so, and if you decide not to travel you'll be charged a £10 admin fee for refunding your ticket...

:?: Just to clarify, what sensible route options does the OP have between Glasgow and Edinburgh and then after resuming their return journey at Edinburgh? Presumably as regards the latter, Edinburgh to King's Cross (via York) is o.k. (it's probably also the quickest), but would Edinburgh to Carlisle (via Slateford and Lockerbie) and then to London (Euston) be o.k. also?

I quite often purchase this type of ticket, for the reasons below, where the travel arrangements need to be flexible but on the specific day the service may be busy (or even full)
The reservations can then be made for my preferred service
However, I may be able to travel earlier or may have to travel later such that I am not be able to travel on the service on which I had reserved seats

Where I know there is no risk of missing a service then I purchase Advance fares, typically liesure travel

To Edinburgh via Falkirk High or Shotts would be quickest I think - not sure how far north is permitted.

Returning via Carlisle isn't permitted as it involves doubling back between Edinburgh and Haymarket - if a Haymarket-Edinburgh ticket were purchased it would be OK is permitted provided that Glasgow-Edin travel wasn't via Carstairs. (thanks tony_mac!)

Direct to Kings Cross would be quickest and is permitted.

Actually I was not aware so booked this ticket. My dates are confirmed so I canceled this(lost 10 quids) and booked advance tickets by east coast from london terminals. It saved me around a 100 pound after paying the cancelation plus oyster from HRW to kings cross. Plus got the seats reserved.

Thanks everybody for pitching in so quickly- going through the forum so that future journeys are less expensive for me :)
