With contactless, no. A registered Oyster card, yes.

Is it possible to get a railcard discount on the Tube with contactless?
No. If you have a National Railcard which qualifies for discounted tube travel, you need an Oyster card. It's necessary to have the discount set on the Oyster card by a member of staff at a tube station (or TfL travel centre) prior to starting discounted travel.

And just to let you know the railcard will not decrease the daily or weekly cap by 33% - it will only lower the single fares alone. This of course means it will take longer to get to your cap but it won't directly affect the cap.

Not quite. An appropriate National Railcard discount attached to an Oyster card will also reduce the Off-Peak daily cap. The best explanation I've read of this complicated subject is from MikeWh's site:

16-25/HM Forces/Senior Railcards, Network Gold Card
Holders of the above National Rail discount railcards can have their entitlement registered on their adult* Oyster card. This then gives them 1/3 off the price of all single off-peak rail fares (NR, tube, DLR and Overground) and also the off-peak price cap. Remember that the off-peak cap applies during the evening peak between 1600-1900. There are no discounts for bus or tram single fares but the bus/tram cap is reduced to the level of the discounted zone 1-2 cap. Also, while the railcard will only discount the purchase of zone 1-6 and 1-9 paper travelcards, on Oyster you also get reductions on the zone 1-2, 1-3, 1-4 and 1-5 caps as well. Plus the Oyster caps are cheaper than the related travelcards.

*Note that only adult and student 18+ Oyster cards can benefit from the railcard discount. 16+ zip cards get 50% discount on all fares.

As an added complication a railcard will only discount off-peak fares, so anything in the afternoon peak would be at full fare but would qualify for the discounted off-peak cap. Clear as mud?

The railcard "exception" to the above list of exceptions and byzantine rules is that a Disabled Person's Railcard does discount peak fares and caps, but, unlike on national rail where a companion can travel at the same rate, the discount is given only to the card holder him/herself.

But there's an exception to that exception!
Discounts on Oyster pay as you go in London

Oyster pay as you go discounts are for the Disabled Persons Railcard holder only.

As a special concession, a Disabled Persons Railcard holder travelling on Oyster pay as you go can get 1/3 off an Off-Peak Day Travelcard Zones 1-6 (including stations in London Zones 7-9 if required) for one adult travelling with them.
