More than once (here for instance) I have complained that the digital archive [of back issues of] the Railway Magazine is not available to subscribers of the actual magazine.
Well they have now opened it up to the latter. You need your ID number and your E mail address and hey presto : access to 128 years of RM articles !
I have nearly all years of the RM (bound) back to 1938 so in fact the search facility is as useful to me as the actual access to the scanned pages.

The Railway Magazine have now stopped producing a yearly index (which those who had their copies bound would have at the front of each volume).....
It's quite sad actually.
I reckon we now know what has prompted the RWM to offer free access to the digital archive to its print subscribers !

Used to amuse me how Ian Allan, in their mainstream magazine publishing days, used to produce their indices.

Modern Railways, with a substantial editorial and production team, used to bring it out in their following February or March issue. It was normally just the section headings.

Railway World, which I believe was one editor plus freelances, would have it in the following January.

Modern Tramway, apparently a wholly amateur production but produced to professional standards, had its index right in the December issue of the relevant year, including the items in that issue with their relevant page numbers. It was extremely detailed, right down to individual vehicle fleet numbers being cross-referenced. It was apparently compiled right on time every year by an amateur who was a schoolteacher in the Midlands.

Slightly off topic, but has anyone else noticed the poor quality of the printing in the latest Railway Magazine ?

Has anyone else noticed the last two months RWMs have been shorter than the ones before ? By about 5mm ? That would make having them bound rather problematic !

EDIT : I think this subject deserves its own thread, here :
