As well as being a railway nut, my enthusiasm for pubs knows no bounds - I'm deep into my logistically-challenging mission to drink in every pub in Yorkshire (currently on 1,187 out of an estimated 4,500). I have vast spreadsheet records of the pubs of Yorkshire and recently had cause to extract some of this into an 'options' list for a forthcoming rail-based pub crawl. The resulting document I thought may be of interest to some forum members and so is attached.
In short, the spreadsheet lists all currently-open stations on the national network within Yorkshire, alongside its closest pub or bar, split into various categories and with an indication of how far from the station the pub is. It should prove useful for anybody who, like me, enjoys nothing more than a rail-based pub crawl, or otherwise for bashers interested in where they can nip to when they have a long 'fester'.
For those who can't access the spreadsheet, the headline analysis of the data shows that:
- 10 stations have a pub actually on the station or within the station confines
- An additional 23 stations have a pub nearby with a railway-related name (Railway, Station, Midland etc.)
- 69% of Yorkshire stations have a pub within c.500m
- 88% of Yorkshire stations have a pub within c.1km
- 9 stations have no pub within 2km and are therefore deemed 'publess'
I should add that distances are very approximate, and also that the definition of 'pub' among pub enthusiasts can be contentious and so my own definition of a pub is contained in the spreadsheet.
As is the nature of the pub sector, the list is a constantly moving feast so I'll be continually updating my master file. Any comments or amends welcome!
