Reading to Brighton - via London

I'm travelling on 19th May from Reading to Brighton

I normally get the GWR service to Gatwick then a Southern service to Brighton.

But this time due to a later KO of 2000¹, Ice got to travel via London.

WHat tickets are available as I'm likely to be travelling across London after the Underground closes (to Paddington), so a day return wouldn't cover that journey

I've been quoted £35.95 for a day return with a Railcard on Trainsplit, will this include just an Underground ticket or can I use it for a bus journey?

I just want the cheapest fare available.

Transit by underground, not by bus unfortunately.

The 36 between Victoria and Paddington is quite quick at night though for the extra bus fare.

£35.95 is the appropriate price for a railcard discounted off-peak day return from Reading to Falmer routed + Any Permitted.

This fare is valid via either Guildford or London, so you can use the Reading to Gatwick service on the way to Brighton, even if you need to come back via London on the return.

Tickets are
  • +ANY PERMITTED (maltese cross via London)
  • NOT VIA LONDON (cheaper)
Day return is valid until 04:29 the following day

The Not via London fare plus a one way change of route excess (charged at half the difference in fare) for the return leg would save about £2.30, then?

If you can get the 2219 from Falmer after the game then you'll get to Victoria before the Underground closes. Depends how much of the celebrations after the game you want to witness.

Which train I get from Brighton depends on how quickly I can get back from Falmer (station near the AMEX). It gets very congested after the game, and don't think I'd be able to walk it.

Last service to Victoria leaves at 2313 then 2 more to Blackfriars, 2323 & 0002.

Trains arrive in London, 0041 VIC, 0049 & 0135. Blackfriars. Train from Paddington 0142.

But I will use the GWR option on the outward part of the journey, avoid rush hour in London.

Hopefully I'll get lucky & Falmer station isn't too congested, may leave match a few mins earlier han normal.

I'd leave bang on full time or a few mins earlier to try & avoid the congestion. Would give me about 30mins to get on to platform at Falmer.

If you do end up on a train via Blackfriars after the last tube, you'll be better off staying on until St Pancras - you can get a direct bus (N205) to Paddington.

Getting either the 36 from Victoria or the N205 from St Pancras is only £1.75, so it may be worth it to watch the end of your game?

If you have a match ticket then you only need to purchase a tickets as far as HHE as the rest is covered by the travelzone.

Is it any easier to go Falmer > Lewes (change) > London; there's one leaving Falmer @ 2234 (Lewes ..41) 2245 (Victoria 0006)? Might cost slightly more bus shouldn't be as congested?

I'd forgotten the free travel zone went back to Haywards Heath, could have saved an extra £5 or so.

I'll know for next season.

I'll ask stewards outside the ground about how long the delay could be to get on to Falmer station platform after full time.

I'll check to see if the platform for Lewes trains is as busy after the game.

If you find the train queue(s) are too long another option is to walk over the station and get the bus (25/28/29) to St Peters. Then it's just a walk up Trafalgar street to the station.

That might be very dependent on the state of the match.

As I recall from my visit last season, you have to choose which queue to join before you have sight of the platforms.

Nothing to worry about in the end, left when Liverpool went 3-2 down got 2159 to Brighton from Falmer & now on 2214 Thameslink to STP. Tube to Paddington then either 0002 or 0031 to Reading.

Think if I'd stayed until full time whistle, I'd still be queuing!!
