Notably showing the slowdown in London and the South East passenger growth isn't being experience by the rest of the country, journeys to/from London was also up 2.1% and propping up the London as a whole tally, its only journeys purely within London and the South East falling and probably a lot to do with strikes. Also for the journeys to London there were some big movers, Wales was down 6% while Scotland was up 7.5% (though both have a very low base compared to other regions) and North East down 1.1% while West Midlands was up 6.3%, the rest of journeys to London were in the 2-3% growth area. Northern doesn't look to be suffering the poor growth people claim it is. Wales had a massive drop off in passenger traffic with pretty much every region apart from North West and West Midlands which were pretty flat.

Every part of London had growth in external journeys of 0-2% with the main outlier being southern outer London down 2.5% (300k), swings and falls in demand for other regions was small and mostly cancelling each others moves out. Within the region Inner London East was flat 0.2% (850k), Inner London West -4.7% (12.4m) Outer London East/North East -2.6% (3.3m), Outer London South -3.5% (5.1m), Outer London West/North West -2.7% (2.6m).

TPE and Virgin West had a very good year, journeys between the North West and Scotland were up 14.2%!!! Journeys between the North West and the Midlands were also up 9.5%, Merseyrail had a flat year, journeys wholly within Merseyside were up 0.7% though journeys between Merseyside and the rest of the country were up a healthy 7.4% (400k). Rail journeys wholly within Greater Manchester were up 9.3% (5m), expect them to be a lower next year with the Bolton and Blackpool line blockades.

Scotland seemed to be experiencing something like Merseyside, journeys wholly within the country were only up 0.6% though to the rest of the country up 7.6% led by a 15.3% growth of Midland (50,000) and 14.2% North West (230,000).

South East was pretty anaemic movements across the board notably a 5.5% fall in Wales traffic, within the region Surrey, East Sussex and West Sussex was -2.2% while Kent was the best performing up 3.9%.

I suspect that there is still a lot of suppressed demand for rail travel on the Regional Railway. Hopefully timetable improvements in the North should unlock even more of this.

I wonder if all those new gatelines in the north have anything to do with increased passenger numbers getting reported. Less chance of a free ride by the "pay if challenged" brigade ;)
