Hi people :)

Can anyone answer a question about rostered Sundays please?

If you choose rostered Sundays when working at a station how many Sundays out of three will you work? I am guessing it will be two out of three, one on an early shift and one on a late shift. Would this be right?

The toc I am talking about does give the option of choosing 10 or 20 a year but because the other workers at the station were all taken on a long time ago, they are excluded from Sunday working, so its down to new staff to cover them off.

If it is a small station, do you usually loose your right when joining to choose 10 or 20 to work?

Thanks

What role and are you safety critical?

Might be missing the point, but wouldn't it depend on the company and the individual rosters at the station for that link/grade? One station I worked at involved working 2 out of 3 Sundays for one grade and 3 out of 4 for another. At another location where I am now the staff only work 3 out of 8 Sundays.

Depends on the station. One station I know Despatchers work 3 in 10 Sundays. All voluntary overtime as Sunday is outside the working week at Northern west. Some work none at all.

I am not working there yet. I am somewhere in the process for platform assistant at London Midland in the Southern West Mids.

I have a copy of the handbook that they sent me as well as a sheet which says new entrants can either:
1. work all rostered sundays paid on an as per turn basis
2. commit to work a fixed number of sundays for the year, currently 10 or 20
3. work extra sundays above ad beyond rostered sundays

The handbook goes on to say the available options are agreed between LM and the unions yearly.

So I guess I am asking based on that info if I am able to specify 10 and then just work 10 a year?

It seems that way but the staff I have spoken to at the station are nearly all ex BR who are able to opt out. They didn't have any knowledge of these options as it doesn't apply to them but they say you won't have a choice, there is no cover so you will be rostered in to 2 out of every 3.

Suppose it depends whether the handbook forms part of the actual contract, but I'd say that if you opt for 10 or 20 you should be able to stick to that number. Not familiar with your TOC though...
