My mother is due on a 'State Visit' (to check the state of Me) on the 8th March.

She is travelling from the Isle of Bute vie Wemyss Bay, Glasgow and Edinburgh through to Peterborough.

She has a Senior Railcard.

She has asked me to book the tickets as she cannot see well enough to manage this herself online.6

She is worried that the weather may delay or divert the ferry from Rothesay to Wemyss Bay.

If I buy her an Advance Single from Wemyss Bay then she is limited to the specific trains.

However, If I book the ticket from Rothesay and the ferry runs late or is diverted due to weather, would an Advance Single still be accepted by the various operators (ScotRail, LNER) on later trains.

The Advance Single from Rothesay is priced at £66.80
From Wemyss Bay, it is quoted at £33.25 (as a pensioner she pays £1.50 on the ferry)
Anytime Single is £107 ish

Regards

Ian

It's a through ticket so yes, it should be honoured.

Splitting the journey at Glasgow (separate tickets from Rothesay-Glasgow and Glasgow-Peterborough) would keep the protection in the event of a ferry delay (as both tickets are railway tickets, so subject to meeting the minimum connection time, a delay on the first ticket affords the right to continue the journey on the second ticket) without the excessive cost of a through ticket from Rothesay to Peterborough.

Two (or more) tickets is fine, as long as they're all railway tickets (one of which may happen to include the ferry) rather than a separate ferry ticket and train ticket.

A good call.

Play around with https://tickets.railforums.co.uk/

and see if that helps, should save a few quid.

My thought likewise. Further thought - does mother get a better discount through to Glasgow than her railcard?
As it is,it seems to be about £5 extra to split in Glasgow rather than WMS, and I would call that money well spent for peace of mind.

The single fare from Wemyss Bay to Glasgow with Railcard is £5.50 + you claim £1.50 for the ferry = £7.00

The single through fare from Rothesay to Glasgow with Railcard is £8.85

Assuming she has a bus pass (seems likely ;) ) , there is also the Strathclyde Concession rates on the trains and ferries. Just a thought.

This doesn't appear to be available on through Rail and Sail tickets from Rothesay, so a further split at Inverkip (Rothesay-Inverkip with Senior Railcard discount, Inverkip-Glasgow with SCT discount) would be necessary to retain the right to use a later train on an Advance from Glasgow in the event of a ferry delay.

This combination works out more expensive than a through ticket from Rothesay to Glasgow at the Senior Railcard rate.

Interesting, I thought you could. Never mind then.

If you drive and can pick her up at Stansted, easyJet seems an absolute no brainer.

I can drive, but chucking in bus, ferry, train, then a taxi to Glasgow airport is more than she can cope with at her age!!

Useful ideas on the splits to keep the ticket acceptance in the case of ferry disruption, I will remember for next time.

Unfortunately, I bit the bullet and booked an advance single for her for the 09.57 on the due date before I checked back here.

Assistance booked at Glasgow and Edinburgh, so we shall see how she fares. (Pardon the Pun)

Normally she would travel to Birmingham International direct, and I would collect her from there but with Carstairs Blockade the East Coast Route seemed best.

Many thanks for all your help.

Regards

Ian
