Definitely best left in my opinion. On some occasions we were told to have a brief look at what we would be discussing the following day to get the gist of it and asked what we thought, many times when reading it the night before it was confusing and was always much easier to understand when talked through with the trainer.

There is definitely a danger of confusing yourself by reading ahead and getting the wrong end of the stick. You'll probably be better served reading up on the basics of how signalling works etc for a bit of an insight, but again don't get bogged down in detail and wait until it is fully explained in class.

When I did my rules we were expressly told not to read ahead, but you obviously know better than the SWT trainers.

How did you do on your rules training by reading ahead?

Who said I read them ahead?? I agree they do slot together in places but some are ideal as a one subject matter read, such as PTS, shunting or the RS521 handbook. Oh and by the way, I obviously don't know better than the SWT trainers I merely expressed my own personal opinion and if people don't agree with it then that's fine.

So your personal experience from not reading ahead is that reading ahead doesnt do any harm!
bearing in mind you didnt read ahead how can you be so sure it doesnt do any harm?

Talk of certain parts being a 'one subject matter' is just back pedalling on your part because you didnt mention that in your original post which reads that it is okay to read ahead on every part of the rule book!
