The Greater Manchester Transport Committee (Metrolink and Rail Sub committee) meeting on 23rd September has the agenda published.

In the section Rail Services Performance Report it contains the following points:

This does not clarify if it is only Platform 1 & 2 being renewed, or whether it is the out of use platforms as well, but still welcome news.

I seem to recall that the previous plans involved removing the ramps which are too steep and hence non compliant with Disability Regulations and replacing them with stairs to go alongside the existing lifts, not sure if this is still the plan now thouigh.

On Skyscraperforum, it is suggested the platform height will be raised.

Thank you for reopening the thread, @Mag_seven. (It occured to me after my request that a new thread - or to change the thread title - might be better because it concerns improvements at Salford Crescent as well as Salford Central. If you think that is the case let me know and I will move to a new thread.)

The next phase of railway and station improvements at Salford will begin in February. The work will involve building the new platform at Salford Cresent and modernisation of the station building at Salford Central.

Salford Central station will be closed (no trains will stop) for just over two months from Monday 10th February to Sunday 20th April 2025.

Full information is in the links, below:-

Network Rail: Railway upgrades in Salford

We’re building an additional platform at Salford Crescent station, and working with Transport for Greater Manchester to upgrade Salford Central

Salford-3D-visualisation-of-new-platform-1024x640.jpg

Project timeline

Work at both stations starts in early 2025. At Salford Crescent, the third platform will be open in 2026.

What work is taking place?

Salford Crescent

We’re building a new extra platform at Salford Crescent, which will improve passenger flow and reduce train delays. This will allow more flexibility for trains travelling through central Manchester and across the country.

We’ll also install a new exit ticket gate line, which will improve passenger flow.

Salford Central

We’re working with Transport for Greater Manchester to upgrade Salford Central station.

This work will deliver a new customer ticket office and modernisation of the station building. It will also see a covered walkway added from the lift to platform 1 and more accessible toilets built.

The station will include new customer information points. There will also be signage for passengers to join up with the Bee Network, Greater Manchester’s vision for an integrated public transport system.

So the work can be carried out safely and as quickly as possible, the station will be closed from 10 February 2025 – 21 April 2025. Work will continue until October 2025.

Find out more in our handy booklet

When is the working taking place?

Salford Crescent

Passengers will notice us at Salford Crescent station from December 2024. The main work begins in March 2025, which is when there will be no services during some weekends, until autumn 2025.

The work will complete in 2026.

Salford Central

Work at Salford Central begins in January 2025 and will be completed by October 2025.

How will this work affect me?

Rail closures

To carry out the work, Salford Crescent station will close for several weekends between March and September 2025. The work will be complete in early 2026.

Salford Central will be closed from Monday 10 February to Monday 21 April 2025 as part of major engineering works at the station.

There will be no rail services across Salford on several weekends throughout 2025:

March 2025

  • Saturday 1 – Sunday 2 March
  • Saturday 8 – Sunday 9 March
  • Saturday 15 – Sunday 16 March
  • Saturday 22 – Sunday 23 March

April 2025

  • Saturday 12 – Sunday 13 April
  • Sunday 20 April
  • Sunday 17 April

May 2025

  • Sunday 4 May
  • Saturday 17 – Sunday 18 May

September 2025

  • Saturday 13 – Sunday 14 September
Salford Central will also be closed on Sunday 27 April 2025.

We’re working with Northern and TfGM to make sure people in Salford can travel as conveniently as possible during the work.

Ticket acceptance for anyone holding a valid rail ticket will be in place for passengers to use any Bee Network bus service between Salford Crescent – Salford Central – Manchester City Centre – Manchester Oxford Rd station (for V1, V2 and 50 services). This will be in place from 10 February to 21 April 2025, and then weekends 26/27 April and 03/04 May. Please plan your journey on Northern’s website.

A real shame that, seeing the live closure coming, that the Salford Central disused platforms work isn't taking place - such a wasted opportunity to encourage more rail use into Manchester (and Salford/New Bailey) from other lines who might not have chosen rail otherwise...or to relieve Victoria... Chat Moss services but also Ordsall.
