Hi,

A colleague of mine, travelling standard class from Sandwell and Dudley to Liverpool Lime street this morning with Standard Anytime Return ticket elected to upgrade himself to 1st class.

He was sold an excess fare ticket for a 1st anytime return but in fact he only intended to upgrade in one direction. Is it mandatory to upgrade in both directions when travelling on an existing Return fare?

Regards
Sparks

The excess should be the difference between the fare paid and the sum of the appropriate single fares or the fare paid and the First Class Return if cheaper.

In this case, the First Class Single is £45.40 and the Standard Single is £32.70, for a total of £78.10, compared to a First Anytime Return of £90.80

As such, the excess should have been £27.00 (assuming the ticket held was an Anytime Return between Liverpool and Sandwell) whether obtained on train or at a ticket office.

In other words he had a £51.10 SOR and paid £29.70 to turn it into a FOR, rather than £27.00 to turn it into an SOS and a FOS.

Looks like he was done a favour.

Looks like he paid 39.70 to transfer the SOR to FOR when he only wanted SOR to SOS + FOS. So not such a good deal.

Don't see the point of F on the London Midland trains - although his argument was for the table and power connections to allow him to spend working time on the Sandwell to Liverpool leg. The Virgin option would make it more comfortable but changing trains that often would probably offset that.

The off peak single for Liverpool to Sandwell is a lot less than a SOS. Next time he could get the FOS + off peak single for less or much the same cost of the SOR.

You can not excess from an off peak fare to a first class fare, you would firstly have to excess the offpeak to anytime.

Ignore did not read post I quoted correctly

Is there a direct SAD-LIV train in the morning (perhaps one that starts off as a stopper like there is one to Crewe in the evening), otherwise a change at Coseley or Wolves would have been necessary anyway.
