Hi Paul

Your best ticket is probably the Freedom of Scotland Travelpass. It allows unlimited travel on trains in Scotland (including services to Carlisle and Berwick-upon-Tweed), as well as travel on all Caledonian MacBrayne ferry services and some bus services.

There's also a 10% discount on Caledonian Sleeper routes, and a 15% discount on the Isle of Mull railway (although you obviously need to get a (free) ferry from Oban to get here in the first place, which can take a lot of time). If you're going further afield, there's also a 20% discount on Northlink Ferries to Shetland and Orkney.

The fares are:
  • £114 for 4 out of 8 consecutive days
  • £153 for 8 out of 15 consecutive days

They are not allowed on trains until after 09:15am Monday-Friday, with the following exceptions:
  • West Highland Line Services
  • Inverness-Wick/Thurso and Inverness-Kyle
  • 0450 Edinburgh-Fort William Caledonian (Seated) Sleeper service
  • 0530 Glasgow Queen Street-Westerton service (to connect onto the above train)
There are no restrictions on weekends.

The ticket also gives you time to explore Scotland if that's what you're looking for, so you can take days off the railways if you want to. But if you're wanting to spend all 4 or 8 days on the rails, the ticket also lets you do that.

EDIT: Mojo beat me to it :(

Does this mean we can or can not travel to Kyle from Inverness and Oban from Glasgow ??

There are also a variety of smaller area rover tickets for Scotland :
Central Scotland - 3 days in 7
Highland - 4 days in 8
SPT Roundabout - 1 day
Daytripper - 1 day

I'm afraid not. However, you can travel to the Isle of Arran at no extra cost ;)

In all seriousness, yes you can get the train to Ardrossan Harbour and board the Caledonain MacBrayne ferry to Brodick, Arran. However, bus services on the Island are not included in the ticket, unfortunately.

And, as Greenback's already said, the restrictions do not apply on these routes in both directions. So you can get any train on these lines at any time.

is this documented anywhere, as I haven't found it. Nationailrail doesn't include the line about ticket types.

also, is this Scotrail only? I can't see anything that says it's not valid on Virgin, XC, EastCoast, TransPennine.

Holders of most standard class tickets can upgrade to the added comfort of First Class on selected train companies on Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holidays on trains which convey First Class accommodation
Scroll down to "ScotRail"
This page also lists all the other restrictions on a per TOC basis

Applies to First Class on ScotRail only
It is due to the limited amount of First Class on services

However, where a train is timetabled for standard only and has First Class, then you can sit in the First Class for "free"

yes, I saw that page - it doesn't say what you posted earlier, and I was wondering where the information came from.

You also said

without saying this applies only to Scotrail, so I wanted to clarify it.
