Is anyone aware how much the ScotRail Highland Explorer ticket costs? This is the newly released ticket from Glasgow - Oban to gain use of the Class 153. ScotRail released this ticket the other day as per their website but I can not find the ticket available to purchase. Does anyone have any information on pricing?

A £10 supplement was mentioned in the 153 refurbishment thread.

Taking a quick look at BRFares, it appears tickets are issued point-to-point (and only along the line of route) with a special fare, such as this day return from Glasgow Queen Street to Oban.

Which stations are you travelling from and to?

£10 extra in that specific case (the unrestricted Off Peak Day Return* is £31.60). Interesting that they're doing it that way rather than a supplement.

* I don't entirely get why that isn't an Anytime Day Return. The restriction does say "not valid on Jacobite steam service" but as that is a dedicated-ticket charter the restriction isn't needed.

BRFares lists the following adult advance purchase fares between Glasgow and Oban:

£56.00 Highland Explorer Return
£50.90 Highland Explorer Off-Peak Return
£41.60 Highland Explorer Off-Peak Day Return
£37.20 Highland Explorer Single

There is also a £10 walk-up Highland Explorer single fare shown, which I presume is the supplement mentioned in the previous posts.

It would be GLQ - OBN. For this £10 supplement what exactly are you getting for your money?

According to https://www.scotrail.co.uk/scotrail-highland-explorer

The ScotRail Highland Explorer carriage has 24 seats as well as 20 cycle spaces. Seats in this carriage will be reserved for those who purchase a 'Highland Explorer ticket'.

If you buy a Highland Explorer ticket, you'll benefit from the following:
  • A seat in our newly designed Highland Explorer carriage with exterior livery that encapsulates the Scottish scenery
  • A hospitality offering *
  • Larger cushioned seats
  • USB and plug socket charging points
  • Table maps on board detailing the route, with recommendations on where to walk, cycle and visit
  • Access to a QR code at each table, providing links to further inspiration on places to visit in Scotland
Those with Standard Class rail tickets will still be able to travel on this service, and they will be seated in the Class 156 carriages, which make up the rest of the train.

* Subject to availability of catering on-board

Reduced seating comfort and the classic fishy niff of Class 153 exhaust pipe insulation, basically. Oh, and being able to sit and watch your bike so it doesn't get nicked.
My exact thoughts :)

I wonder if this hospitality offering means you get a free round of tea/coffee and a biscuit like first class
