i'm thinking of applying for a trainee driver position with scotrail. there isn't much detail about the staff benefits. can anyone tell me about the pension, ie contributions, accrual rate etc? what about travel perks? the scotrail website says free and reduced rate rail travel but doesn't say any more than that. can anyone divulge?

many thanks

I would suggest you ask these at interview
The pension question usually goes down well, shows you are interested in staying long term

As for free and reduced travel, you are going to be bitterly disappointed
My brother gets three free trips each year on the sleeper, had to wait 12 months before qualifying
Travel to/from work on ScotRail is included

I have just applied for this role at Edinburgh, fingers crossed. Disappointed to hear about the travel though, I live in Lancaster and would have to relocate (thinking ahead here) if I did get the job so thought it would be easy getting home every now and then.. obviously not :(

Be careful with this one, as there was a report that some employees moved across Scotland then the following week were made redundant

I would suggest travelling in the short term, once you have been employed for three months then relocate

I would also strongly advise against relocating for a TOC job. Too many horror stories...

Taking a step back here I have only applied and haven't had much luck with First so I'm not expecting much.

Horror stories? Please share with us all :)

Does this apply to trainee drivers aswell?

Reason i ask is i am due to go soon for the reaction and structured interview for the edinburgh position and if i get the job the free travel would be handy!

My other half works for ScotRail and she gets the following:

- Free travel on ScotRail routes (Includes Sleeper but they have only have a small amount of cabins for priv travel)
- 10 free days worth of trips on First operated routes
- The ability to buy tickets for your friends and family for £2.50 single / £5 return on all First operated routes, but they must be travelling with a priv holder
- 75% off all other routes
- International rail discount card (after 1 year of service)
- Pension (not sure of details but I believe for now it's final salary pension)
- Healthshield cover which First pays the first level of cover for you automatically
- Some perks website (discounts, vouchers etc etc)

Hi Jimmy, you will get your passes sorted out on the first morning of your induction. Bring in passport sized photos of you, your wife, kids with marriage certificates, birth certificates and admin do the rest for you.

Once you have signed the contract your sorted. Free travel is amazing. Me and my missues getting to Blackpool for free soon on Transpenine. Not bad
