The 1884 Colchester earthquake (magnitude 4.6) is said to have been the strongest in the UK for nearly 400 years, but was considerably less strong than the Dogger Bank earthquake of 1931 (magnitude 6.1). The worst damage in 1931 was in Filey.

Louis Napoleon (later Napoleon III) stayed in Southport for a while in 1846 (some believe that Lord Street in the town inspired his vision for the boulevards of Paris); exiled in England in the 1870s he died at Chislehurst.

The Tonypandy riots of 1911 happened during a miners' strike/employers' lockout over pay. In fact most of the clashes between soldiers and miners happened in Porth. The troops did not open fire, but one miner died, probably as a result of a blow from a police truncheon.

From Mynydd Rhiw in Aberdaron parish it is said to be possible to see the Wicklow Mountains in Ireland on a clear day.

Captain Atkinson was lord of the manor in Low Angerton in 1894, whereas Colin Atkinson was captain of Somerset CC in the 60s. He was born at Thornaby.
