The World Gravy Wrestling Championship takes place every year near Bacup. The World Pie Eating Contest. on the other hand, took place last year in Wigan.

NB - Gravy and pies are intimately connected in my mind.

The UK Snooker Championship is currently held in the Barbican Centre, York; when it was first held in 1977, the venue was The Tower Ballroom, Blackpool.

Elswick was the original home of the Elswick Bicycle Company, later acquired by the Hopper Bicycle Company, which moved all production to Barton on Humber.

Boothby Graffoe is a "spring line village" - sitting below the Lincoln Edge limestone ridge. Edburton in Sussex is similarly situated in relation to the chalk ridge of the South Downs.

Upper Beeding is very close to Windmill Hill in the South Downs. There are many other Windmill Hills. Perhaps the best known (certainly to archaeologists) is near Avebury in Wiltshire

The City of London still maintains its own police force, founded in 1839. This is sometimes thought to be the oldest in the UK. In fact the Metropolitan Police, founded in 1829, is older and the City of Glasgow had its own police force much earlier, in 1800, although this is now merged into Police Scotland.
