The Church of St John of Jerusalem at Winkburn was a cell of the Knights Hospitaller during the mediaeval period.

The great adversarial lawyer Sir William Garrow (1760–1840), coiner of the phrase "innocent until proven guilty", was born and brought up in Monken Hadley. Upon his death, Garrow's will (written in 1830) contained only two demands; to set up a trust and to be buried in his birthplace. The second instruction was ignored: Garrow was buried in the churchyard of St Laurence, Ramsgate, his parish church.

Wallace Henry Hartley (2nd June 1878 – 15th April 1912), one of the violinists and the bandleader on the RMS Titanic, was brought up and lived in Colne; he is buried in the town's cemetery. John Law Hume (9th August 1890 – 15th April 1912) was a fellow violinist in the band; he was born in Dumfries, Scotland where he lived with his parents.

Dumfries is suggested by some as the site of the Battle of Tribruit, cited in Historia Brittonum as one of King Arthur's battles. The most famous was the Battle of Mount Badon for which many sites have been suggested - the most popular seeming to be Badbury in Wiltshire.

Norwich has long been associated with the manufacture of mustard. The world-famous Colman's brand, with its yellow packaging, was founded in 1814 and operated from its factory at Carrow until the end of 2019. In January 2018, it was announced that Colman's was to leave its base in Norwich and would move its production to Burton-on-Trent.

Following World War 2, highly secret early digital electronic equipment for military applications was developed at an Admiralty facility in Borehamwood.

During the same period, similar developments were undertaken by the Plessey Company at their Allen Clark research centre at Caswell House, near the Northamptonshire village of Greens Norton.

The parish of Bucklebury has three main parts. The original village is on the banks of the River Pang, which runs for approximately 14 miles from its source near the village of Compton to its confluence with the Thames in the village of Pangbourne.
