George Hayne, 17th/18th century merchant and entrepreneur, was born in Ashbourne. In 1711 he obtained the lease of rights to undertake the Trent Navigation, and helped to make Burton-upon-Trent pre-eminent in the brewing industry.

The remains of the former Steel, Peech & Tozer steel works in Templeborough were converted into the Magna Science Adventure Centre, and in 2001 became the recipient of the RIBA Stirling Prize. The winner of this coveted architecture prize in 2014 was the Everyman Theatre in Liverpool.

(Yes, I know it's the architect that's the winner of the Stirling Prize, but you know what I mean!)

A Cistercian monastery was founded at Barnoldswick in 1147 by monks from Fountains Abbey. However, after six years - and before construction was complete - they left the area, partly as a result of unhappy locals. Instead, they went on to build Kirkstall Abbey in Leeds.

The Parish Church of Wrexham is St Giles, whose tower is the tallest building in the town and can be seen for many miles around. It is celebrated in an anonymous rhyme "The Seven Wonders of Wales:"

Pistyll Rhaeadr and Wrexham steeple,
Snowdon's mountain without its people,
Overton yew trees, St Winefride's well,
Llangollen bridge and Gresford bells.

St Winefride's Well is in Holywell, Flintshire. (Or Treffynnon if you prefer!)

According to its Wikipedia entry, Pentre Halkyn "has a quarry, a small hotel, a local shop and not much else." However, it does have a triangulation point 290metres above sea level, from which (on a clear day) can be seen Blackpool Tower.

The National Trust also owns an estate in Alderley Edge.

(Which used to be as posh as Prestbury until the WAG mansions were built.....)

Seend (Wilts) was another location featured in a BBC series following the life of a member of the clergy.
