185s might be nice to ride, but they are not nice when they are rammed ,they are inadequate for the amount of passengers that use the service -it is near impossible to get a seat on the service between sheffield and manchester (unless you book a few months in advance that is ;) ) i dread to think what the service to manchester will be like when EMR give up the liverpool -nottingham service especially if TPE get the route

I'd ruefully mention that earlier this year I made 6 journeys from Dore to Piccadilly, 5 with booked seats. I couldn't get anywhere near the booked seats twice, was fairly near twice and got seated once!

Whether you book months or even days in advance it doesn't guarantee a seat on the 185s between Sheffield and Manchester. Occasionally I was allowed the privilege of being able to get to and sit in my reserved seat. Some of the time I ended up in an unreserved seat. Then there were the other times...standing from Stockport to Sheffield whilst being squashed around bikes and super sized luggage. I did even manage to stand near my reserved seat on a couple of occasions though.

The idea is that the Hope Valley Class 185s will [apparently] be doubled up...

And some of them have been for about 2 years. What's annoying users is that those that were doubled up have recently reverted to 3 car and the promised doubling of more is being dangled like an unreachable carrot every week. It is going to happen, eventually, but it's particularly inflaming users when they see all the fanfares for new Nova trains elsewhere and our service is going backwards. 3 services from Manchester to Sheffield cancelled tonight - and 2 Northern ones as well.

I think a few 185s are out of service with mechanical faults at the moment, that plus the ongoing issues with the Nova fleets (and the 350 situation) means the fleet is spread a bit thin.

Piece in Sheffield Star's internet edition today, not seen in print, doesn't feature rolling stock but punctuality. Sheffield is currently a graveyard for trains that run to time!
Two stations come in the worst 21 in the country for punctuality.

See; https://www.thestar.co.uk/news/traf...tations-sheffield-trains-turning-time-1339568

These are the best and worst railway stations in Sheffield for trains turning up on time
A railway station in Sheffield is in the bottom 20 nationally for trains arriving on time, latest statistics show.

Dore and Totley station in the south of the city is 2,599th out of 2,618 stations for punctuality, according to the website ontimetrains.co.uk, which ranks stations according to how likely passengers are to be left waiting.

Just 13 per cent of trains arrived on time over the last 12 weeks, its statistics show, with 18 per cent running 10 minutes or more late and five percent of services being cancelled.

Sheffield station is also languishing in the bottom 200, ranking 2,454th, with only 30 per cent of services on time and 19 per cent either cancelled or delayed by at least 10 minutes.

And Meadowhall fares even worse, sitting in 2,501st place, with 17 per cent of trains on time and 19 per cent either cancelled or delayed by at least 10 minutes.

Chapeltown is ranked 2,251st but there’s slightly better news for passengers at Darnall, in 1,618th, and Woodhouse, in 1,458th.

Some Sheffield Supertram stops are also ranked for punctuality by ontimetrains.co.uk, and they are much higher up the table.

Tinsley Meadowhall is 641st, tied with Sheffield Arena, and Sheffield Cathedral is 524th.

At Sheffield Cathedral, 75 per cent of trams arrived on time and just two per cent were 10 or more minutes late, though 16 per cent of services were cancelled.

The best station for punctuality, according to ontimetrains.co.uk, is Barons Court tube station in London, where 100 per cent of services arrived on time.

Bottom of the pile is Swanage, in Dorset, where 100 per cent of services were 10 minutes or more late.

When you look at the track layout into Sheffield Midland it's a literal bottleneck. So how can the issue be resolved?
