Is there a website to find out what stations have short platforms due to guards not always announcing what carriage you need to be in to get off.

Past threads on this subject always seem to be answered in an ad hoc fashion, suggesting that there isn't an overall centralised record, although I believe that the relevant sectional appendix should give the answer for specific routes.

The Sectional Appendix will give the platform length, but you need to know the train length and cross-reference the two. Obviously, train lengths vary from timetable to timetable or week to week and so any definitive list would be quickly out of date.

Most Trains' automated announcements tell you whether there is a short platform. As you've listed yourself in Portsmouth, Desiros (450,444) do this too.

Station announcements also may say but sometimes they will direct you to announcements on the train.

For Safest bet, travel in front 4, very rare that only 1st coach is released although on the South Coast there are some stations.

Winsford, Acton Bridge, Liverpool South Parkway, Rugeley Trent Valley and Atherstone all need to be alighted at from the front four carriages of eight car 350 units.

On the South Western Railway network it is further complicated by the fact that both 23m coach 444s and 20m coach 450s operate. So at some stations how many coaches the platform can accommodate depends on what stock your train is formed of. For example at Beaulieu Road you have to be in the front 3 coaches of a 444 train or the front 4 coaches of a 450 train. There are plenty of other examples of this at other stations across their network too. It is a shame it is not published anywhere online though as it would be useful for passengers to know in advance.

It would be handy if the operators themselves could embellish themselves with such details, it's about 50/50 when we get to Norwood Junction on a 12 car service whether there is an announcement or not. Cue mad rushes forwards for those who might be un-aware!

In my experience guards and/or automated systems are usually pretty good at announcing short platforms.

(Except for Northern who still seem to put no effort into fixing the number of times their systems announce the wrong station. Someone should push them regarding the safety issue on this, given the risk of visually impaired passengers disembarking at the wrong station).

That can work, but there are many locations where the platform length given in the sectional appendix is not the same as the usable platform length. This might be due to the starting signal being mounted on the platform, or part of the platform not being used due to stepping distance issues or poor surfacing.

Then there are locations where the front of the train stops off the platform (Bath Spa on the down for 9/10 car 80x).

There’s several places where you will potentially come unstuck travelling in the front of the train as it’s the rear that is platformed.

Dawlish Warren and Hungerford on the up spring to mind.

The Sectional Appendix claims to be the usable length, so if it's wrong then by all means let the right people know!
