If this is in the wrong place then please could a mod move it?

Over the last few days I've noticed an annoying bug with the site. Once you click on the "view latest post" icon to go into a thread you need two clicks of the back button to get back to the forum. The first one just returns you to the thread you were looking at. It's almost as though you silently load the page again so it's there twice in the browser history. This is happening on multiple browsers on multiple devices, so I'm convinced it's a forum issue. It's not happening on any other site I visit.

I noticed this on iPad/iPhone only on loads of websites, in the past week or so.

Strangely, I've encountered this on other sites, but not here! I must admit I put it down to something to do with adverts being blocked on those sites. As you can see I'm not very technically minded.

I appear to be having the same problem on this forum, but it may be because I'm using an iPad. I'll have to see if it occurs on my laptop.

It's been happening for me for several days, only on this site, and only when returning from thread to forum board. (I only use an iPad). But it takes three clicks of the back button, should I feel special?

Also had this problem but mine was on the mobile version using a samsung s4, but for me I could not go back only reloading the same page no matter how many times I pressed back.

Doesn't look like it's that, is it more to do with the operating system I wonder?

Seems to be OK on the work computer with IE but needs more than one hit of the button on the home one with Firefox.

When you click the [v] button to go to the newest post, this links to:
http://www.railforums.co.uk/showthread.php?goto=newpost&t=some-thread-id
The forum doesn't respond with any page content, but a 302 redirect to whatever happens to be the current latest post.

Different browsers handle going back in this situation differently. Historically, you used to have to click Back twice very quickly to get past this redirect, or you would just be redirected forwards again.
I believe that most newer browsers will actually go back two pages when the previous one was a 302 redirect, however my testing with Safari just now indicates that it behaves differently in this case.

Thanks for raising this - I have now just discovered the latest thread button as an alternative to clicking "Last" page.
:oops::)

By newest post, I of course mean oldest unread post. This may not necessarily be on the last page if multiple new posts have been made since your last visit to the thread

Can someone point me to the easement that allows such a double back please?

I am currently using an I-pad and the only thing that happens when I hit the back button is the advert at the top changes.

I believe it's down to the way the browser handles the Javascript - and it seems that happens before the redirect to the "#post1839065" anchor tag (which takes you to the unread post). The browser therefore sees this as two actions, and the back button behaves accordingly. Hence why when you load a page manually (with no redirect to the latest post) the back button behaves more normally.

I'd been thinking this was a bug with my iPad because it's been happening on countless websites, but I've identified what causes it (it's not only with the view latest posts function) and I've asked the relevant people to fix it.

19 replies to get this. I did smile when creating the thread and wondered whether the other meaning might be mentioned at some point.;)

Easement 700099: Passengers travelling between threads and sub forums of Rail UK may double back between threads and the index pages. This easment applies in this direction only.

It's fixed for me now.

Is there an update on this. It's driving me nuts at the moment. It wouldn't be so bad if it was every back, but whenever I try and get one over the software and press back twice it seems to go back 2 pages.

I have never had this problem on either my laptop or my phone.

Like Martin said it's due to a redirect and will vary from browser to browser. To be honest, is there any need for it to use redirects rather than just directly linking to the page?

I've not had a problem today, so if it has been fixed, thanks!

As far as I'm aware, it was fixed a couple of weeks ago.
