Hi Everyone i found this at the Sittingbourne And Kemsley steam railway website http://www.sklr.net/

The very last train to run on Boxing Day ??

On a day when the national rail network is virtually shut down and there will certainly be no main line services through Sittingbourne it is likely that the very last train will run on the Sittingbourne and Kemsley Light Railway. Unless circumstances dramatically change the last passenger service on a railway that has run for 102 years will steam out of Sittingbourne Viaduct at 14.00 on Friday 26th December, 2008, just nine months short of the 40th anniversary of the operation of the railway as a heritage line. One later train may run that day but only as a goodbye to the railway and exclusive to members of the railway.

Future trains are very unlikely unless the minds of officers and elected members of Swale Borough Council can be changed. The Council's officers have recently produced proposals (‘The Green Clusters Report') that totally exclude the Light Railway which is undoubtedly Sittingbourne's biggest tourist attraction. In the total shambles of a consultation on the future of the town which Swale Borough Council has carried out, ‘heritage' has been completely ignored, be it ourselves, the Barge Museum, the town's Heritage Museum, or any other organisation.

As for the current land owners M-real, perhaps they were running Sittingbourne paper mill at a loss and did need to cease production but did this Finnish company have to have total disregard for the history that they were entrusted with? This history goes back nearly 150 years to the day when Edward Lloyd first started paper production in Sittingbourne and which carried on successfully via Bowater's and UK Paper.

Sittingbourne's Steam Railway was given notice to quit the land on which it operates at the beginning of 2008 when their landlords Messrs M-real decided to pull out of Sittingbourne including closing Sittingbourne paper mill, which is currently up for sale. The railways licence to operate on the land expires on 28 th January, 2009. By that date we are supposed to remove all the locomotives, coaches, wagons, buildings and all other paraphernalia. How can a charity that has struggled to survive for most of the 40 years it has operated afford to make such a move and where to?

Following on from an idea from one of the railways junior members a poster/car sticker campaign is being launched, you can download a SOS (Save Our Steam railway) poster here. We are asking the public to display these in their windows, on their cars, everywhere.

Details of how to contribute to the Fighting Fund to pay for legal fees, posters, advertisements etc will appear here soon, in the meantime, please send letters of support to us, either by email to [email protected] or by post to SKLR, PO Box 300, Sittingbourne, ME10 2DZ .

Such a shame for this wonderfull little line, especially as its the first steam railway line i ever went on as a very young kid. Hope it can be saved.

Karl :(

This is a real shame, the Gala weekend is coming up soon, looks like I better try and get there.
Imagine the fact that there possibly won't be any more steam trains in Sittingbourne, it's been there for a long time.
It has got to be saved!

This is the publicity I've received through the KESR firemans mailing list. it seems like theres going to be a fighting fund and they are asking people to publicise the railways plight:

"S&KLR Closure Publicity Campaign

As many of you will be aware, our late colleague Andy Wilton was a very active supporter of the Sittingbourne & Kemsley Light Railway, being a footplateman and its financial director until his untimely death earlier this year. You will also be aware form various reports in the railway press that the line is threatened with closure, as the land on which the lien operates is being sold and their bid to purchase it has not been accepted.

The S&KLR website states that a poster/car sticker campaign has been launched and asks that supporters download a SOS (Save Our Steam railway) poster http://www.sklr.net/SOS Poster.pdf. They are asking the public to display these in their windows, on their cars, everywhere.

Only public opinion can save what is South East England's only preserved former industrial narrow gauge railway. Your opinion counts."

There is also a site set up on the Social Networking site 'Facebook' advertising the railway and asking for support.

It will be such a huge shame if this line closes. No idea what will happen to the unrestored locos and stock, but they will will probably be cut up, as it would cost thousands to shift all of their collection. :(

We had a joint KESR & SKLR staff day at the SKLR today and very good it was too.
it was the first time I'd ever been there and what they have is certainly unique.
To a certain extent i think that things are looking up for them. The council seemed to have swapped sides in response to local public opinion and English heritage are looking in to listing the concrete viaduct which was the first of its kind.

Yeah Swale Borough Council are now on are side8-)

I was there too on saturday it sure was good ,The timetable was out of the window again  The problem now is that the land owners M-real dont wanna talk to us or even Swale Borough Council. Its the head office in finland that are not talking the english side are talking but the Finns no luck .so who knows what will happen I hope it stays so that next year gala we could bring in an ex loco from Whipsnade Zoo.

So please help save the SKLR.

At the moment they are trying to get the Finnish ambassador involved. And are local MP has said he would go to finland to talk to M-real. Also Lord Faulkner who is chairman of the railway heritage committee has written to Lord Adonis asking for his support.

Sorry I am not in the picture as I was taking one myself :D Though in the picture there are some SKLR members but most off them are KESR members :-8

We getting more & more support now and I have a feeling that we will be running next year fingers crossed.:D

I must get over once more this year. Needless to say I will go plenty of times next year :) Hopefully someone will save it right at the very last minute. To be honest, I cant see it closing. There is too much support. Tis a lovely railway, and Sittingbourne will be losing over 100 years of its heritage. It simply cant happen.

I agree with you there, if it closes due to the decision of someone who doesn't know the history of the railway, then it's a great shame. Also Swale Borough Council should be doing more things to save it.

They certainly should. Believe it or not, I read somewhere that a number of citizens, particularly kids in Sittingbourne were asked about the SKLR. The majority of them had never heard of it.

Now that I can believe.
I might have to hop over the Swale (well, trundle in the case of a 466! :p) and go see the line before (if) it closes, might make a meet of it, if many people are interested.

Darn good idea. I think it will make a huge turnout. It would have to be on a Santa Special though. I think we should.

My local line, and just for your information, it isn't full of pikeys, just chavs! <(

Same thing :lol: Is the EWS 08 still over on the Island I wanna get a shot of that 8-) Do you know of any freight that comes off the Island at all I know there is the steel train, Do they still do the car one anymore from Queenborough :?:? On friday we saw a lot of EWS wagons just before you get into sheerness station so there must be some freight:roll: .

Back on topic.

Yeah that is true Josh about people in Sittingbourne dont know there's a steam railway in there own town :o:shock:But I think more people are now knowing that its there now with the amount of press we are getting in the local papers. I if we are running next year I think when we have special events we should do what RH&DR do and put posters around the towns.

When I get some more news I post it:)

In answer to these questions:

1) Yes, there is only one - 08921 ''Pongo''.
2) Yes, mostly steel from the steelmill.
3) Yes, they have recently restarted transporting cars/vans from the island via the railway.

Hi James,

No ideas of any times, but I do know there's a freight train between the 1630 and 1700 SSS - SIT services (I think it's those two, it's around that time anyway :) ).

Sorry I can't be any more helpful.

Thanks
Ryan
