One of the pair of snow ploughs seen at Peterborough on Saturday. Anyone know how many other snow ploughs there are dotted around the network, and where they are located?

There are 2 at Inverness, over the years ive been visiting Inverness they have always been there. Most recently in December with a pair of class 37's, a West Coast & DRS.

Got photos somewhere, my photo site seems to be playing up at the minute.

One of the ploughs can be seen here, the other was a little further up the siding and out of shot.

So that's what those 'random' things are sitting just North of PBO!!

Always wondered that (as I've never seen them in Action!)

Thanks!

Hope this isn't a stupid question, but: Why do the independent snowploughs have a cabin? Unlike the loco pushing them (the driver can see through the cut-out) , they have no forward vision. Is it for communication (non-verbal) with the loco crew?

There are 32 snowploughs currently operating on our network.
This information comes from platform 5s british railways pocket book no. 3.
Hope this helps

They are converted steam locomotive tenders, the "cabin" is the old coal space end.

Aren't most the remaining ones these days on old class 40 bogies? There definitely have been ploughs on tender frames in the past though, wouldn't surprise me if a few were still extant.

EDIT: That's just the smaller Beillhack ploughs: The big 'uns are, as you rightly say, on tender frames.

the one in the pic is an Independant Snow Plough, though there are two types, the biggie in the pic and the smaller 'belihack' plough, and it is the latter which were built onto old class 40 bogies. There is a pair at peterborough still, at the end of a siding just north of the GBRF shed. There is an NER ISP at Shildon, and yes some where built on old steam loco tenders, but these ones are purpose built. I think the cabin is for equipment storage.

Ploughman - a great BTF clip! Thanks for that.
I loved the line, "like eating the landlady's cake - the more it is divided the easier it is to get through." :p
