Hi,

Hoping someone could confirm with me the following.

If I have a SOR/FOR from Euston to Irving, can I break my journey at Glasgow Central overnight and carry on up to Irving the following day?

Do I need to depart Glasgow before midday?

Thanks in advance.

Fine as long as you're using the ticket between the "valid from" and "until" dates printed on the ticket. For an SOR the valid from date will be the date for which the ticket was purchased, and the valid until will be 5 days later (OUT) or 1 calendar month later (RTN).

So if you had the outbound portion of an SOR dated today, you could break and resume any time tomorrow, or any day until Saturday (inclusive).

That is likely to be a very expensive ticket for the journey though - what are your actual plans?

Thank you for the detailed response, appreciate it. It's actually a priv ticket so I'm guessing SOR's are going to be my best option.

Thanks, I'd loved to be proven wrong about PRIV being the cheapest option! :)

Here's my plan:

Monday Feb 17th
13.30 EUS-GLC

Tuesday Feb 18th
09:00 GLC-IRV
15:40 IRV-GLC
16:40 GLC-EUS

Assuming that you want to travel direct via the WCML, the following combination is cheaper.

London Terminals - Milton Keynes C. Route VIRGIN TRNSONLY Anytime Day Single £4.65 PRIV (for outward)
Milton Keynes C. - London Terminals Route VIRGIN TRNSONLY Anytime Day Single £4.65 PRIV (for return)
Milton Keynes C. - Rugby Route Any Permitted Anytime Day Single £3.40 PRIV (for outward)
Rugby - Milton Keynes C. Route Any Permitted Anytime Day Single £3.40 PRIV (for return)
West Midlands Day Ranger £5.95 PRIV (for outward)
West Midlands Day Ranger £5.95 PRIV (for return)
Stoke-on-Trent - Warrington Stns Route Via Crewe Anytime Return £4.30 PRIV (cheaper than the ticket from Crewe itself)
Freedom of North West 4-in-8-Days Rover £16.75 PRIV
Lockerbie - Irvine Route Any Permitted Anytime Return £10.30 PRIV

Total: £59.35

Condition 19(c) of the NRCoC allows you to take a non-stop WCML service between Euston and Glasgow Central with the above combination as there is one leisure travel pass in the shape of the Freedom of North West 4-in-8-Days Rover.

There may be other even cheaper options.

Thanks, I'd loved to be proven wrong about PRIV being the cheapest option! :)
PRIV through fare is very rarely the best value ticket for long-distance intercity travel, thanks to uncontrolled price hikes on SORs over the years by the TOCs.

One thing to point out is that I would take a copy of the relevant page of the NRCoC with you as it's quite possible guards will not be familiar with condition 19(c). In my experience they are all well versed in spliting tickets at stations where the train calls (condition 19(b)) but they are not familiar with using the season ticket/leisure travel pass part of the condition which doesn't require the train to call at the split point.

If I have a SOR/FOR from Euston to Irving

Remember you will require a 1st class status pass for purchasing a FOR. Also it's Irvine not Irving.

Looks like someone has found you a good deal. I have used rail rovers in conjunction with priv singles/returns for many trips and have had nae bother even when the train did not stop at the changeover point.

Which train company issues your pass? You may find that you can get some free travel also. [This may require some creative routing that can add significant time to your journey though?]

Have you thought about the Caledonian Sleeper from EUS to GLC. Priv singles are £26.70 advance & £37.90 walk up. This includes the berth charge too - no staff travel in the seats.
