I am interested in becoming a train driver and wonder if anyone has any idea what southern rail is like to work for as a trainee driver?

I am also wondering what the shift pattern is (what times start and finish & how many weekends etc.)

I don't drive for Southern , but why don't you apply. If you get to interview , you can ask the question.

Depends what depot you will be based at. Selhurst and Norwood Junction have some very early starts at 03-something.

The rest day pattern is fixed. Here is Three Bridges roster from a while ago to give you an idea:

You drop a line each week.
Earlies/Lates alternate weeks, which can sometimes be hard going from lates on Saturday to earlies Monday.
Working two out of three Saturdays, but get a long weekend every three weeks.

About 1 in 3 Sundays rostered to work. More about those in a minute.

A/R is 'As Required' (also known as 'spare') and means you can be given a duty which starts upto +/- 3 either side of the A/R start time. If the duty you get is less hours than the A/R hours you don't lose out. If its more you get paid overtime for the extra.

Sundays are outside the working week, so are all overtime. You are expected to work them though, but you are able to give them to other drivers to work if any want to, and then you can have the day off. I think they get time + 20% for Sundays now at Southern.
