Has anyone seen any tokens in the mirror yet or know when they'll be in there?
Should start next Monday according to Northern. Also worth noting they'll be in the Daily Star then too, which would be the cheapest paper of the lot.

True but my grandmother doesn't use trains and gets the mirror so I can ask her to save the coupons. Also saves the need for a brown paper bag which The Star would require ;)

I have not seen it mentioned elsewhere, Transport for Wales is offering 50% off Advance fares.

Note that tickets have to be bought before 30th September and have to be for travel between 3rd October and 22nd October.
From 19 September, you can get 50% off Advance train tickets for journeys between 03 to 22 October 2024, when you buy with us via our website, app, ticket offices and with on-board retail staff.

So, if you’ve been fancying a weekend away, or you are planning on visiting far away friends and family, now is the time to buy. But hurry, you only have a week to take advantage of this offer and once tickets are gone, they are gone. Offer ends 30 September.
But still, a good deal.

Looking at the link, it's the first time I can ever recall the option to buy Advance Tickets from on board retail staff. Has this always been available?

I feel this is probably a mistake, Fujitsu Star Mobile (which is the onboard TIS they use) I don't believe has any ability to retail advance tickets.

If you've got an HSBC Visa credit card, check your emails to see if you've been invited to a 10% cashback deal on groceries, fuel and transport in Oct/Nov/Dec. Could be quite lucrative.

If it works on Uber, a very nice offer to stack with their 10%

I'm still waiting for some uber credit from ages ago now - March! Gave up with their offers as it is just so unreliable :(

£1 fares on the Marston Vale Line have been extended to 16 November:

Fantastic news for those who use the line regularly.
I stumbled on these £1 fares when booking a Birmingham to Cambridge itinerary today for next month. I wanted to cross off the Marston Vale line, having heard so much about it, added Bletchley and Bedford as via points, to pick up an EMR Connect service to St Pancras. I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw the breakdown of the split but this explains it.

I guess the locals will feel like it's the least they can do!

With the Northern paper promo, do I have to get it on the day or can I purchase it before the date I plan to set off?

Greater Anglia's Hare Fares promotion is back, with tickets on sale until 22nd October, for travel up to 2nd December. Return fares "from £12" in units of £6, although the webpage also mentions short hop fares from £6 return, such as Norwich to Great Yarmouth. I'm pleased to say that the offer hasn't managed to undercut the Advance fares I've already bought!

Details at this page.

Nice to see a TOC offering a decent discount on flexible off-peak tickets - ideal for in impromptu day out - well done to Greater Anglia.

Sadly, living up north, the only promotions I ever receive from Avanti and Northern are for restrictive advance and/or app tickets that have to be booked in advance, and which I always decline no matter how cheap.

About time TOCs realised that some people like to get up, see what the weather is like, and then decide they might like a day out - without having their pockets dipped at the booking office.

Are the Hare Fares to Liverpool Street issued as London Terminals or just Liverpool Street returns? For example, coming from the Cambridge direction, could you use it to Fenchurch Street (with or without tube) without needing a separate oyster fare? If so, would it be valid to BoJ at West Ham (previously changing at Tottenham Hale & Stratford) to catch a c2c service?

The Northern £10 day ticket offers are an exception to that.

Last time i used one it was issued GA only, and annoyingly with no break of journey permitted

Very true, and to be fair they are excellent value.

But they add layer of hassle in having to go and buy the local rag three times, cut out tokens, print off forms, and then be left with a local newspaper I wouldn't even waste my time glancing at.

Now, if Northern offered them with three Tunnock bar wrappers instead...

Thanks, I assume that's to catch out Stansted folks. However, it looks like you can get the deal on Tottenham Hale returns now (not sure if this was available previously) which is still likely to save a few quid and allow me to get seperate tickets to go out via central London and back via Stratford.

While it could just be me, the LNER discount seems to have gone from the Barclaycard and NatWest rewards scheme. I still have it against Amex cards but it might be worth buying gift cards to maximise discount (but minimising cashflow)

(Edited to add) It also seems to have gone from Airtime.
