Does it block both your digital card number and your actual also?
No, just the one that was declined at presentation.
I know of several passengers who’ve had their physical card black listed and Apple Pay still works, or vice versa

Perhaps next time I'm down that way I should just add my card to Google Pay and see if that works?
If you delete a card from Google Pay and re-add it, does it get a new virtual number? (not that I'm trying to be fraudulent, in case anyone wonders, but it obviously seems to be a very loopholey system).

Honestly don’t know. If you get a new physical card with a new number that would work.

Your bank are the only ones who could say why they declined the original transaction Blacklisting the card from stagecoach’s systems, unless you had no funds, which is then an act of fraud to have obtained the bus travel and knowingly not reserve funds for when they deduct the transaction.
Lloyds Bank seem to have a disproportionately high number of blacklisted cards from observations as a driver, suggesting Lloyds may well decline the transactions despite funds being available, or Lloyds have a disproportionately high number of customers who don’t manage their funds very well!

I've noticed that my debit card asks for the PIN a lot more frequently after I've been tapping in on buses, makes sense.

No fraud going on. Plenty of grands left on my credit limit. FWIW my credit card is Halifax, which is the same banking group as Lloyds. Could be they use a funny number which Stagecoach's systems don't like, so could be either the bank or Stagecoach (or Stagecoach's bank).
Stagecoach's website says getting a new card wouldn't work, as it's the same account (how Stagecoach would know that I don't know), so I don't even think Stagecoach knows how their system works.
It just seems Stagecoach bought the cheapest system they could and it doesn't work properly

I've also had a card blocked by Stagecoach.

It was a year or so ago but from memory, the ticket was issued and the transaction appeared as a pending charge (probably 10p) on my bank statement.
The transaction was never completed by Stagecoach, so I was never billed for the journey.
Since then, the card doesn't work on Stagecoach.

Off topic, I've also bought a day ticket from Diamond Bus in Birmingham which never appeared as pending or a charge to the account.

A renewed issue of my credit card is blocked by Stagecoach East. Its Google Pay token works just fine, the previous physical issue worked, and the current physical issue works elsewhere (including with Stagecoach Midlands), but for some reason has never been accepted on Stagecoach East.

I sent an email to them about 4 weeks ago (with sales receipts) and will probably chase them up later this week.
Their reply to me said it should work after 5 working days. Today (2 weeks later) I tried again and it was declined yet again, so bought my ticket using GP and sent another message to them.

To be clear, my account is in good standing and I made a successful contactless (retail) purchase after my journey.

They never replied to me. Never took my £2 neither.
Probably a case of some director in the company bought some ticketing package that doesn't work as it should, and no one else knows how to get it to work properly.

Received a similar reply to the one before, attempted a purchase over a week later... and it finally worked. Third time's the charm!

Incidentally, the existing contract with Vix runs until 2026, but if they are indeed supplying Stagecoach with a new model from next year that would suggest another contract (continuing an unbroken streak from 1998) is in the offing.

Just to update anyone following this thread - my credit card now seems to work on Stagecoach. There was me thinking I'd be getting another free ride ;)
