Hiya, just got a job with Rail Gourmet as an on board steward.. (ok trolley dolly ) am due to start in June, got the induction in Euston and just wondering what the induction entails? You don't have to have uniform to this induction do you? I forgot to ask the other day, and similarily the local induction what's that like and are you uniformed then too? I know you work the train from day 3 (with someone else for a few days)....

Duty pass gen, I'm Exeter - Waterloo so presumably the pass covers that whole route for the first 6 months then (I've already been told) I get SWT travel after then.

Hmm just wondering I guess if there is any gen, what to expect etc?
Anything would help!! :)

I have no idea as to wearing uniform to the induction, when I had to do my induction with FCC I didn't have to wear a uniform as it wasn't issued at the time.

It might be the same for you but it won't hurt to ask them.

As to the job offer, well done - it's hard enough getting a job on the railways full stop not to mention even harder getting or having a job in the first place during these hard times.

Poor customer service, the ability to blank the customer, the ability to con customers when serving and also a good grasp of the art of ensuring ones nails are in tip top condition is a good place to start :D

In all seriousness, have fun with it. Guessing SWT need more staff with the new hourly timetable coming in!

Just don't pinch the platform ramps when the station staff are trying to assist a passenger in a wheelchair!

thats so irritating! arghhh use your own damned ramps, its not my fault you lost it, funniest was when one of them tried to put our voyager ramp down on a 158 or something and couldn't work out why it wouldn't sit flush with the step.

Lol, thanks for all the comments - I'll bear the ramp thing in mind - I'm yet to be trained so...! As for tart with a cart or whatever... - teehee I'm not a tart; I have a brain!

As for Driver Stacey; yeah, long term goal tbh but ya gotta start somewhere! I've been applying for rail jobs since I was 17 (22 next month) - though in Devon and Cornwall. Fairly lucky to get one in Devon, I'm aware of the Rail Gormless title but hey, idea being, do this for a good ole stint, maybe transfer to a TOC (could do with Priv considering the amount of rail fots I like to do) then, operational is where I want to be so TM, then Driver - ya never know...! :)

Hellfire, which co-op is this, might may a visit ;) (Expecting freebies of course :P)

I disagree, from a staff view a freebie is great but I would be more then happy to just get a discount on the stuff especially seeing how expensive buying stuff on the railways can be.

Getting a bit wibbleous though atm, why can't people return the requested references?!?! I can't start til they're back with RG and it's typical, you sort yourself out then wait on the work reference... <(

Well Wikipedia defines Gourmet as "Gourmet is a cultural ideal associated with the culinary arts of fine food and drink, or haute cuisine. The term and its associated practices may have negative connotations of elitism or snobbery, but is often used positively to describe people of refined taste and passion."

So does some dodgy butties and a kit kat cover that definition?!!

There's a reason I always buy food outwith railway premises - I think NXEC are charging 70p for a Mars bar at the moment...!

I got charged £1.50 for a packet of walkers cheese and onion with ATW!!!! The RRP is 39p for the big eat packs!! So assume they buy them for around 30p, they make £1.20 profit per packet!!!

I do agree - railway food is far too expensive!! Mind you I should really live the brand and get you all to buy now since I'm told I get 5% of everything sold....!!
Even so, I'll buy a cup of tea generally on a longish day trip say my NTA-BHM manuveoure but bring my own food, when desperate I've bought sandwiches but they are mega kerching :(
