According to my Southern App, a GX single fare (GTW-VIC) is only slightly more expensive (1.60) than the Southern fare. But nearly everybody seems to opt for Southern. As a result Southern trains are crammed and GX ones half-empty. Last time I travelled from LWS, I was seriously concerned i might not be able to get off at East Croydon, it was so busy. About 5 minutes later a GX sailed serenely through with bags of space.
From earlier in the thread, it sounds as though signage at GTW may be the issue. Any observations?
Minded to tackle GTR on the issue.
Its still 1.60 more so why pay it especially as many maybe using contactless to continue journey further into London. Be more sensible just to one service provision to London Vic and provide appropriate level of train service and actually save themselves some units i suspect.

The folk with huge suitcases who had just flown in from Canada and elsewhere would not know about contactless and should have been encouraged to use GX, IMHO. They would then have a seat and room for their luggage. As it was, the crush may have contributed to a young lad being sick just as we reached ECR. You can see why I feel strongly about this!

It's much cheaper to travel on Southern using contactless than GX.

The difference is £20.60 on GX and only £9.00 on Southern. A huge difference rather than a mere £1.60.

When a traveller arrives the country and see a barrier into the station, the instinct is to tap a contactless bank card to open it.

Not everyone at Gatwick wants Victoria. There will be quite a bit of churn at East Croydon and Clapham Junction on the Southern trains.

This just goes to show how complex the fares are. I quoted the Anytime Day Single prices from the Southern App. Where do yours come from?

As time goes on as well the 313s will be in a state where they cannot run in public service and at the current rate of things there will have to be even more cuts if these units cannot run/are not replaced.
I guess you don't remember the Connex era? The 313s are in way better condition than any Connex stock in the year 2000. I don't just mean the slam door units. The 319s and 455s were a right state too.

Much of what you say is true, but this really isn't.

Brighton to London is priced very similarly to other equivalent journeys into London - ranging from 14p per mile for a Super Off-Peak Day Return to 47p for an Anytime Day Return, and 19p for an annual season ticket used 5 days a week.

That compares to 24p, 49p and 23p respectively for Basingstoke; 17p, 45p and 25p for Milton Keynes; and 28p, 69p and 23p for Didcot - as with Brighton, these are all journeys of around 50 miles into London.
and on journey time

Brighton 1hr 5

Basingstoke 44 minutes

Didcot 40 minutes

Milton Keynes 33 minutes

So other destinations more more for speed potentially

I was born a few years before the southern franchise started, this is just my observation.

Minded to tackle GTR on the issue.
Did the Train advertised on the app stop at any other stations after GTW?

I just hope that a stop at Clapham Junction can be added into the Gatwick Express services such that Brighton - Clapham Junction direct train will return. If they can be debranded and become Southern trains it will be better as well as Gatwick Express is a scam to airport travellers.

Having to pay extra for the GEX just to get tables must be a massive put off for anyone travelling between Victoria and Brighton.
Some Thameslink-priced + Any Permitted fares, where the normal route is totally on Thameslink, have validity on the Gatwick Express while undercutting Gatwick Express own Airport-Victoria fare by nearly half.

I'm going to try it out on later. As this is clearly a loophole fare I'm not going to post it here publicly, PM me for details.

Yes but they are likely to have been Tourist Trapped (?), Likely they have seen a train to London labelled Gatwick Express, didn't know there are slightly slower services and decided to just pay the money. I wonder if Staff at Gatwick Airport direct tourist heading to London on the Gatwick Express?

I have no idea why I have replied to this relatively dead thread; I was looking for a different one in the first place!
