We're off to Tenby in a few weeks' time with our Thomas The Tank Engine-obsessed 3 year old.

Is there anywhere within an hour or so drive where he can see, or even better ride, on a steam train?

Clearly Covid is causing some limitations as the nearest standard gauge line, The Gwili railway is closed according to their website.

The Teifi Railway - a narrow gauge line is open https://www.teifivalleyrailway.wales/ and is an hour from Tenby according to Google maps.

Depending on your route to Tenby you could also look at the Pontypool & Blaenavon https://www.bhrailway.co.uk/ which is a couple of hours away from Tenby in east Wales, but not far from the M4 or A40 / A465 - so could be used to break your journey to / from Tenby.

With Covid, do check their websites as things may change and they may have to close at short notice.

Scolton Manor near Haverfordwest is home to Margaret which was on display in the car park the last time I visited. It's also a good place to spend a couple of hours with kids.

Brecon Mountain Railway at Merthyr Tydfil. Steam Narrow Guage. It's about an hour and a half from Tenby.
Perhaps a bit too far for a day trip with a 3 year old or try and include when driving to or from your holiday destination? Make sure to check their website for times and if tickets have to be bought in advance.

Your only 2 lines just within the hour of Tenby will be:
The Teifi Valley Railway near Newcastle Emlyn, who have now reopened and are well worth going to. They are very friendly and I can recommend the home made cakes in the cafe.

and The Gwili Railway, but unfortunately they are not running this season due to Covid 19.

According to their website they're closed dur to Covid restrictions, hence my suggestion of Pontypool & Blaenavon as part of the journey to / from Tenby.
