Hi all,

I'm trying to work out the best combination of tickets for myself and the girlfriend for a trip to see friends in London and Bournemouth. We are looking to do something roughly as follows:

  1. Depart Stockport at approximately 19:00 on 17/2/16, to get to Euston a couple of hours later and then pop along to Seven Sisters, where our friends live, and stay in London for two nights.
  2. Travel from Waterloo to Bournemouth on 19/2/16, arriving for approximately 14:30 and staying for two nights.
  3. Return on 21/2/16 from Bournemouth to Stockport, departing approximately 12:00.

Things to note:

  • Travel around London is fine, we have the remaining dregs of our annual travelcards left from when we worked in London a few months back to cover this
  • Our 2 Together railcard has expired, but can be renewed if it is cost effective to do this (I am assuming given the length of journeys it will be!)
  • No RRB's of any description are to be involved ;)

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I would renew your two together card, try trainsplit for your journey back, I did a search and it gave me a total of less than £55. See what advances Virgin have on the way down from Stockport to Euston then use your travelcard to Seven Sisters.

Likewise, I couldn't see anything better than using separate Advances for each of the four legs of the trip. With a Two Together railcard you might be able to do it for around £150 less £50 TT discounts plus £30 for TT card = £130

e.g. undiscounted prices as follows:

Stockport 1904 - Euston 2106: £21 each

Waterloo 1235 - Bournemouth 1420: £11 each

Bournemouth 1050 - Waterloo 1334: £16.90 each

Euston 1457 - Stockport 1656: £26 each

(James Wake was probably looking at Bournemouth 1150 - Waterloo 1434: £16.90 each, plus Euston depart at 1537: £36 each)

The 17/2 11:35 London Waterloo- Bournemouth service currently costs £16 in total (£8 pp) on Megatrain, and the 19/2 11:59 Bournemouth- Waterloo service currently costs £20 in total (£10 pp).

There is also a 50p booking fee, but this is still slightly cheaper than booking directly with SWT (albeit that Megatrain merely act as SWT's agents, and the SWT franchise agreement specifically requires that Megatrain tickets are subject to the NRCoC).

As noted by John I left London too far into the duration of the annual term for a refund to be issued, sadly.
