A long t

If the item has a wrap around barcode a long thin sticker wouldn’t be long enough to go completely round the item.
Depends how long it was. Appreciate the Sainsburys ones probably aren't quite long enough, but then they don't have wraparound barcodes.

All this used to go much smoother when I was on the tills at Iceland and M&S and just knew most of the codes anyway. I didn't even need to know where the barcodes were.

Bring back Kwick Save where the staff knew the price of everything, no bar codes needed, a %reduced sticker would suffice... :D

And prices changes on some things every week and they were quizzed on new prices!
Think it went to EPOS near the end though.

In the Nectar app I've got a wide variety of bonus point offers on things I often buy many of them 20-40 points, plus 5x points when I spend £40 (which is therefore at least an additional 80p, but unlikely to happen as I often walk to Sainsbury's). Then there is count up to Christmas where I have 600 bonus points if I gain 600 points (including via the bonus points).
I did well in the fruit and veg challenge recently getting the maximum possible amounts of bonus points.
With the bonus points up to Christmas scheme, I just stepped my habit of timing some purchases to match the bonus points up a gear. So, for example I bought some tinned meats earlier, as they will not go off but I just got the extra Christmas points for accruing these bonus points sooner than I would otherwise have done.

Funny you mention that, the local Poundland were having a bit of a refresh of their outdoor signage last week and the Kwik Save signs was still present under the Poundland signs! Sadly covered back up now :(

I used to work in a Somerfield store in the late 90s and it hadn't long had bar code scanners. I can remember checkout staff telling me how much slower it is scanning each item. With the price stickers they just knew the price of most common things like milk, bread etc so could type in many items before they were even unloaded onto the conveyor.

Those stickers were poor and bits fell off. On my very first Saturday student till shift with a big queue, I panicked at a missing half label with only ‘2p’ left showing on a box of teabags. I banged in ‘12p’. The next customer had the complete ‘92p’ on theirs!

Not a supermarket, but similar to the photo posted by @johntea, post # 1865.

Image shows a new branch of KFC being prepared for opening, the shop was previously an estate agent, below the KFC signage is the remains of the estate agent signage, which reads “independent estate agents since 1862”.

Labels were split with a curly cut down the middle to prevent people removing them from cheaper items and putting them on more expensive ones.

Many years ago my local COOP had price stamps, using purple ink and a pad, I suspect that they went out with decimalisation in 1971. They were alright on the tops of cans and bottles but I cant remember what they did with packets of crisps and chocolate etc.

BBC has been reporting that there seems to have been some technical glitch at Morrison's, meaning that 'More' loyalty card product discounts aren't being applied at the tills, and the full, undiscounted, price is being charged. :s

BBC said:
Morrisons customers have been unable to get discounts on their shopping ahead of Christmas after a problem with the More loyalty card.
But social media users say their discounts are not working at the till, with one person posting a photo of an error message at the self-checkout, which reads: "We are really sorry some promotions and discounts are not working at this time."

I feel for the poor IT bods at head office who were hoping for a relatively quiet Christmas.

Oh wow, now that's proper vintage Kwik Save, you can just make out the slightly newer style logo on the banner further down... It's quite remarkable what still lurks beneath newer signage these days!

From what I’ve seen today absolute mayhem in all the supermarkets, local Asda has 3 hour+ delays on click and collect orders

They’re closed an entire ONE DAY!

Why why why do people leave it until the last minute to get their shopping ? it always baffles me ,I appreciate there are some who have no choice but really !

I tend to stick to Sainsburys in the run up to Christmas, my local Asda/Aldi/Morrisons are hell this time of year, Sainsburys on the other hand, a little busies than normal but in comparison, relativly calm!

On the subject of Aldi, has anyone else noticed they don't seem to be stocking a lot of normal products to make room for Christmas produce?

A lot of stuff this time of year has very short dates. I can’t work out whether this is a deliberate policy to encourage multiple visits, supply chain variations, or just customers picking items from the back or the shelf, as I’m sure you get products with better dates normally.

I went to Sainsbury’s on Thursday morning to try and do some shopping but many items were just not suitable meaning that I had no choice but to go again.

Coleslaw (best date 22nd)
Bread rolls (19th)
Normal bread (21st)
Smoked salmon (25th)
Sausages wrapped in bacon (20th)

are just some examples.

Can't say I noticed that when I did our big Christmas shop on Friday, split between Asda and Sainsburys (the two shops were necessary due to stuff being out of stock at Asda rather than due to short use by dates) I got everything we needed until the end of this week with decent dates.

Lidl & Aldi locally (Luton) are closed on both Christmas Day and Boxing Day (as well as New Years Day). Much more civilised.

I managed to get everything we needed in Lidl on Friday (20th). No issues with expiry dates either.

Baffles me too, did all mine last Thursday, with just a couple of days buffer for out of stock items which I could buy in the local Tesco express I guess. Main things are bought, so there is no worry.
People order online on Christmas Eve too.. that's got to be a bit of a lottery for out of stock items.

Heard a classic on Saturday 'Took me 45 minutes to get out of the car park, I only went in for some milk' (or some item like that) .. and someone piped up 'Is it busy?'

On Christmas eve last year I did a last minute top-up shop at Aldi and was pleasantly surprised by how quiet it was (the shop and the town in general). Not only that, because they were going to be closed for two days, much of the chilled stuff was reduced. I only needed a couple of bits and pieces that I'd forgotten when doing my main shop, but I took the opportunity and bought a few extra things for the freezer, especially as the discount was more than the usual 30% off. I've still got a few things to buy, so I'm hoping to employ the same tactics tomorrow.

I've probably jinxed it now! :)

Lots of Coop stores lost the ability to take contactless payments for about 45 minutes earlier this afternoon, with predictable chaos

In Hinckley Tesco this year have gone from about 15 to 7 staffed tills, Morrison's from 14 to 8 and Sainsbury's from about 15 to just 5 staffed tills, result is absolute chaos as of course self service aren't as quick. I work in the Morrison's store and yesterday at one point we had queues for the staffed tills right to the centre aisle!! Not sure how Sainsbury's managed with just 5 staffed ones....

Our sainsburys went from about 15 to 5 staffed tills earlier this year. Oddly about two weeks after I swapped to scan and go. It’s fair to say that the queues for the staffed tills have gone down. I reckon I save about 10 minutes on my average big shop, and the only issue I have is that sometimes there is only 1 person monitoring the self checkouts, and if they caught up with a customer who is being awkward or stupid they take an age to get to my trolley full of wine.

I’ve noticed that in previous years too. Lots of Christmas-themed food with expiry dates well before the 25th.

However, today has made me realise we are now definitely into the Christmas holiday - Our corner shop has got a big cardboard dispenser full of Cadburys creme eggs!

No issues in Morrisons Stoke this morning, but I was very grateful for the 10% off! Must have cost them a pretty penny.

We did the booze shop at Waitrose this evening around 7. It was fairly pleasant - not too busy and not many queues, and all the stuff due out of date over Christmas was reduced. Only downside was that quite a lot of stuff like basic veg had been stripped bare over the course of the day
