I was told that I'm in a supernumercy link for a conductor role yesterday with five links in it with one person waiting in it.

Didn't get chance to ask the conductor what this meant in English.

Can anyone help?

As an adjective, supernumerary is to exceed a usual quota or number. So as a noun as a supernumerary means you will be employed on a potentially temporary basis apart from the usual numbers of guards employed by Northern.

Its not to do with being employed on a temporary basis at all! The jobs secure despite what the last posts have stated, you could be supernumery for days up to over a year depending

Basically as a supernumery you are outside the roster as theres not a spot ready for you yet. You still turn up every day and act as a spare (however the rostered spares and standby have to used before you are). You may ask to go and assist the rostered guard with tickets etc but that isn't always allowed. You will go into the link / roster when someone leaves for any reason and its your turn to enter (there may be a number of supernumerys)

It is like a starter link. You go into it until a vacancy in the main link becomes available. You get your road learning and any other training done quicker (as you are released more often) and you can generally get lieu days granted. It is perfectly normal to go into the supernumary links after qualifying

I did say it was a potentially temporary job. I didn't say it was definitely temporary.

Hi Andrew

Does this mean you have been offered a position with NR?

Hi hidden

No I haven't, I explained to the conductor that I was in the talent pool for Skipton which is where he worked and asked if any vacancies were coming up.

He asked if I'd passed my assessment and I said yes.

He then told me that I'd be in the supernumery link and that five links were available and one person is waiting to fill the next link.

He said that I'd not to worry because Northern wouldn't have invited me to a second interview if they didn't want me.

Through what I have read on here am I right in thinking that there's five positions to be filled and only one person is waiting atm to fill one of them (me)?

However it is definitely NOT temporary and 2 posts (1 now deleted) insinuated this. Unless you are sure what it means its probably wiser not to post as I can put unnecessary stress on the person

Or is it a case that there's a employee at the depot I have applied for who has applied for another job and hasn't got it yet (Conductor who has applied for a train drivers job, passed everything and is waiting for a course to come up).

Then when his/her job comes up and they then vacate the job, do I then fill that position?

Should have asked him to explain in more detail tbh.
