Looking on Flickr I came across this photo, no idea of number but it doesn't look olive green to me, more like a dark grey.
To me some greens look like a nice shade of grey (mild colour blindness) but the picture makes that coach look dark blue.

That sleeper (?) looks wedged under the skirt at the coach end - reminds me of cars that have had their wheels nicked !.

I notice it is a cheap paint job because the top of the roof is light blue.

I can see seats still in there. I was under the impression that part of the work done at Bournemouth before sending them off to Widnes was the stripping out of the ex 460 coach.

Paths are now on RTT for the transfer of 458514 from Bournemouth to Widnes but there does not appear not to be a transfer of 458403 in the opposite direction

Tuesday 12th November 2024
5O09 1318 Leicester L.I.P. to Eastleigh East Yard

Wednesday 13th November 2024
5B09 0757 Eastleigh East Yard to Bournemouth T&R.S.M.D

5Z66 1441 Bournemouth T&R.S.M.D to Eastleigh East Yard

5Q95 1752 Eastleigh East Yard to Widnes Transport Tech

It would appear that 458411 has become the 18th 458/4 to see passenger use

They’re suggesting replacing 158/9s with 701s to Exeter?!
With batteries. The seating layout can be changed. Just leaves the door positions which I think we will have to accept 1/3rd + 2/3rd positions could become a norm for anything other then the most extreme intercity routes.

Suburban trains on London - Exeter. That’ll give “No 450” a run for its money!

No different to a 450 really, once the interior layout for either is altered. The big job will be a battery conversion of either 450s or 701s - my money is on 450s but 701s might be easier for all I know and certainly gives a longer life after conversion.

The whole point is SWR look to be having a significant surplus of suburban EMUs so they would not waste time re-purposing 444s which are a scarce resource.

This is being discussed at length in this appropriate thread, worth having a look before we go even further off topic.

All a significant downgrade on the current offering! Alas, as you say this is off topic, I shall say no more!

It got re-instated and at the third attempt it did run to Wembley yesterday evening

However a traction fault has led to todays onward move from Wembley to be cancelled

Assuming that this is 458403, then this is the same unit that was delayed for nearly a week on its northward journey to Widnes due to a traction fault with the loco.

It looks like another plan has been made to continue the transfer today

0Z47 0937 Peterboro Maint Shed Gbrf to Wembley Receptions 1-7

5X64 1321 Wembley Receptions 1-7 to Southampton Central

It has also been confirmed that it is 458403 with 57305 in Wembley Yard

A rather fraught journey from Kingston to Wimbledon yesterday lunchtime involved three trains, two of which were 2x458/5s, which must be a record.
Firstly Control in their wisdom decided the 200 people waiting at Kingston for the Waterloo train were not worth stopping for as the train was running four minutes late, so we were treated to the sight of 458536/35 whizzing past us, and we all had to cram on the following 2x455. As this was itself running eight minutes late Control decided to tip us all out at Raynes Park and run fast to Waterloo, so we ended up on 458533/29 (running an Epsom line service). Given that this train was now doing the work of three, it was fortunate that it had ten cars.

Are there any other 458/5s still running - I've lost track?

458530 is the other one still around. 4 458/5s in service each weekday out of the 5 left in service, unsure how many at weekends.

I can confirm this ran last night as I was treated to the sight of 47739 opening up through Basingstoke last night as I was waiting for my cancelled SWR.

Is the general consensus now, that the Class 458/4s will never see outer suburban usage alongside Class 450s and 444s? Will the latter just return to the inner suburban routes they used to run?

Also would anybody bear footage of the Class 458/0s in their first years of service? such as 2002/2005? I am intrigued to see the appalling build quality of the units, before they were withdrawn in 2005. Also according to Wikipedia the units leaked water in to the saloons. Would anybody recount their experiences of this when the Class first entered service.

They still do leak.

I very much remember when they first entered. Loose and rattling panels (resolved by Wimbledon using copious amounts of mastic), ceiling panels hanging off, the TMS having to reset part-way through what felt like almost every journey, every unit having bad wheel flats, even in the summer, aircon giving up at the first sign of warm weather, water dripping out of the aircon units, barely audible PA. The list goes on. The overall quality was extraordinarily bad and fair play to SWT for putting so much effort into getting them to at least a half-reasonable standard.

You mean former rather than latter? The 458s won't be needed for inner suburban routes.
