There are a few services each day which do this Monday to Friday in both directions. I forget how many.
I think a victim of the COVID axes, but there used to be a 10-444 16:45 service to Havant which was first stop Guildford, running via Cobham. It was a really nice service to take home. I think there was a 12-450 17:15 Fratton too which did the same.

There are some non-stop services such as the 18:15 from Portsmouth Harbour that runs via the New Line Guildford, aka via Cobham

According to this picture, SWR appears to be looking into expanding the routes covered by 458/4s

Why are they getting rid of 458529 and 458530?
I thought originally the number required was determined by their intended use in 12 car formations on the Portsmouth services. So presumably it was worked out as so many diagrams and enough over for maintenance.

The cancelled 442 plan was to have 18 units for 9 pairs, so that would logically become 27 for 9 triples. 28 being an insurance spare?

yup, the routes which were previously mentioned on this thread. they did PTI test runs to Woking via Staines/Windsor & Bracknell in December.
I know I've said it before, but why on earth didn't they go the extra 10 miles to Reading?! Going as as far as Bracknell is only useful for two MF evening services and during relevant engineering works.

I still thought it was better to have the last two units.
Spares from the 6 they scrapped?

They've barely got the staff to run the service as it is, running them to Reading LTP would mean taking crew off other work to balance out the roster with current staffing levels.

Maybe in time they will go all the way, but quite possibly demand also isn't there either?

Sorry, I don't follow. My query was if they were testing as far as Bracknell, why they didn't go the short distance to Reading while they were about it. It would add an extra hour to the test. That's hardly going to bring the whole SWR network to its knees.

And what if they really were as critically short of staff as you say they were on the day in question why did the testing go ahead at all?

I am sure that I read in this thread that the 458/4s are not permitted to operate between Bracknell and Reading as they are out of gauge because of the stiffer suspension installed during the refurbishment to support the proposed faster running on the Portsmouth Direct services.

Not route cleared yet(!). I understand they will be cleared in the near future.
