This is for test runs for 458/4 running on Tuesday, Thursday & Friday starting this week, depending on Driver availability.

Night testing starts from Oct 23rd between Bournemouth Depot & Basingstoke.
From RTT the first test did not seem to run yesterday?

Seem to be seeing more 458s recently on the Kingston line - a welcome move to have 5 car trains back. Most of them are the last six (with all vehecles ex-Gatwick Express) which I suppose is to be expected as they are not going to be converted so there is no urgency to remove them from local services.
I see also that at least for the last few days the 13.06 Waterloo-Hampton Court has been a pair of 458s according to Real Time Trains. I think the Hampton Court branch is still mostly 455s, though.

Do the 458s currently have any booked workings to Chessington South, Dorking, or Guildford via Bookham or Cobham?

It replaced a 707 diagram, works 2D (Guildford via epsom) and 2J (Hampton court) cycle as they are interworking services

I understood some 12-car trials were run when new? I'd certainly expect them to be tested as such as they were specified for 12-car operation.
Thought they'd run as 12s on the SWML side when new, to Basingstoke or Farnham/Alton... but that's a long time ago and memory isn't the most reliable.

They also took over a weekday 707 diagram that runs ECS from Clapham Yard to Dorking to form an early morning SWR passenger service 1D12 0701 Dorking - Waterloo

SWR is on RTTs 'Know Your Train' so is good to use to double check whats running

Surprised to see the 1145 Guildford - Waterloo via Epsom made up of a 10 car 458?

It looks like another delivery from Widnes (458425?) has been planned for tomorrow, but as yet I cannot see any onward path from Wembley. I imagine that at some point there will come a time when Bournemouth will have insufficient space to store any more 458/4 and they will be diverted to an alternative location, but I have no idea how close that time is.

Thanks for the update. Has 8516 been stood down awaiting transfer? Also, would you happen to know if 8533 is ever going to make a comeback? TIA.
U.458516 is at Bournemouth Depot having seats & fixtures removed from old 460 coach in readiness for move to Widnes later this week.

Down to twenty-four 458/5s available for service then, which considering the 707s are gone and nothing arrived since all 456s went and a handful of 455s too, puts all the more pressure on the 450s and rest of 455s for now.

Oh, I missed that although I came back from Bournemouth earlier and still they evade me.
Suppose I won't need a refresher as there can't be too many changes in the cab or train.

I'm wondering if I've missed an announcement about these trains...

It seemed from posts much earlier in this thread that the current SWR management had no intention of using the 4-car 458/4s in service. The prototypes of the conversion would be completed and tested in accordance with the initial contract, and would then be stored pending a decision at some future time as to whether the rest of the 458/5 fleet would be converted and redeployed as previously planned.

But now it seems that four /4 units have already been completed with at least two more in preparation, which seems rather more than just completing the initial prototypes. Have SWR decided to continue with the conversions, and so they will eventually turn up to replace the 450s on the Direct? Surely after the wastefulness of the 442 and 769/9 fleets being rebuilt and then never used, we're not going to see another fleet following their example? Apart from anything else, there can be little space available for storing a load of 458/4s in addition to all the 701s cluttering up the available storage locations.

So is there any reliable information regarding how many units will be converted in the current tranche of work?
