Agreed. More so than commercial guards
forgive my ignorance i assumed commercial guards would be more secure as they sell tickets as well as other guard duties. what makes them less secure than metro guards where some would say there is the biggest case for DOO

Depots with metro guards are only ever 1 driver pay deal away from extinction really, whether the treasury would offer the 10+ percent it would require is another question. Comm guard is a safer role, which you could move in to at all depots except Wimbledon and strawberry hill.

Metro guards are on a much lower salary for starters. Not withstanding the proposed pay offer.

Drivers do not want to move a train without a guard though! This 1 pay-rise is not a real possibility, metro guards are safe for a few years i’d say!

Quite a big gap between Metro and Commercial Guard rates. Especially when Metro guards now are meant to carry out ticket checks. Can’t say I’ve witnessed that yet though.

SWR driver recruitment has moved towards external off the street trainees taking up more than half a course with no ties to current working practice. They also took on a load of qualifieds from Southeastern and southern in the qualified recruitment drive post pay deal. Money talks

Just applied for metro guard, passed the first customer service online assessment but ran out of time on the numerical test after. Does this mean I've failed or am I still in the running. TIA

Regardless of running out of time, did you submit it?

They will email you whether you were successful or not, it was over a year since I did that but I'm sure they're looking for accuracy and attention to detail so as long as you weren't extremely slow, its more important to get the answers correct.

I believe it automatically submits as far as however you got.
Regarding pay deals, drivers and job security - mixed. My TOC is doing the same now, recruiting off the street, young, impressionable trainee drivers who will only think of the money when pay deals for DOO are offered.
