Good Job on clearing you're 158's and 323's!
What ticket was it you used for you're days trip when you got to Stockport? :p

05/11/16 - A Bonfire Day Trip...to Southport?

Today actually felt a bit like simply a day trip out via a couple of random places since there wasn't actually much scope for "unit bashing"...but none the less, we shall press on.

Today's choice of tram was B6...which meant the 0855 to Malin Bridge. When rocking up at the tram stop at 0853 to find the tram stop completely...empty, this was when I knew the day would be rather...different, perhaps. A minute later, a very full 116 turned up to take me to the station, where after waiting in the queue at the ticket office for 15 minutes and seeing about 30 something Derbyshire Wayfarers get sold to football fans travelling to Burton, the Northern ranger was purchased, and it was off to the Parly...

I believe this was actually only my third (or fourth, however you look at it!) parly run, and all of them have been this year, and almost all have been Pacers...the joy of living up north  144010 was the chariot forwards to York, via Sherburn, and it became obvious by the time we arrived at Meadowhall what the day would entail - although I should've anticipated this from the four days of Supertram reliability! Dropping to 10 minutes late at one point, we still managed to arrive into Sherburn early, which put us back on time all the way until arrival at York, where poor railhead conditions left us a slight delay upon arrival. This concluded the first bit of track that I won today, Moorthorpe to Church Fenton.

Next, it was to the Blackpool train, and I wasn't impressed when my second highest mileage Northern 158 turned up, Perkins engined 158851 to take me to Accrington. This journey was nothing short of a disaster. I'd diagrammed in a 22 minute connection to visit the Tesco at Accrington, however a wait at Church Fenton for a late TransPennine to pass, exceptionally poor rail conditions combined with a 158 which seemed rather broken, we were losing time like it had gone out of fashion, eventually arriving at Accrington 14 minutes late. I had to abandon the visit to Tesco, in case there was a queue. Cue hunger :lol:

I'd finally stumbled across a winner at this point, as winner 150147 with dud 142045 were my next units, up to Colne and back to Blackburn - finally clearing the Colne branch. Now I'm not entirely sure what I was expecting out of it, but it certainly wasn't tedious, even being sat in the 142 on the way back with the 150 locked out of use with all the jointed track - and I daresay it'd probably also be a route I'd do again at some point given the chance.

At Blackburn, we'd arrived in early! What a rareity - but of course, the Manchester Victoria via Bolton was late, and this made my 8 minute connection at Bolton rather tight, although a rather busy dud 150272 was taken through to Bolton, winning the track between the two stations for me. A quick run over the bridge later, and it was to win the fourth and final stretch of track today, across to Southport. It was at this point that my Twitter updates stopped, as I'm sure those who follow me on Twitter will have realised - idiot here forgot to charge up his power bank and so I had 40% of power to last me back to Sheffield  The steeds for this were dud 150273, although fortunately winner 156486 was tagged on the back - and was a damnsight quieter (and nicer!) than the 150 on the front

The guard on the Southport was rather confused by my Sheffield issued rover, and gave me the look of "Why have you come from Sheffield to go to Southport?" as I replied with my destination to his enquiry upon departure from Wigan. This was all new track from Wigan to Meols Cop (weird place, I know!), although I honestly thought we'd be getting a few FTCs on the run there - indeed, this almost happened at Gathurst, where there was quite an obvious emergency brake application to help us actually stop at the station - it seems the 150 had other ideas with what to do

Eventually into Southport, and a quick check that I could grab some food without being stranded anywhere, meant that I had a quick relief break in Southport, flagging the idea of returning to Manchester on the units I had come in on.

Relief stop later, and a decision that I didn't particularly like Southport after darkness (it was only 5pm at this point!!), it was onto winner 150111 for the trek back into Manchester. This 150 had a very annoying rattle to it, and was nice and quiet up until Wigan - although it was sending me to sleep, and I didn't fancy any more 150s today!

Fortunately, my worries against the fact that my luck today wasn't working well and that I'd miss the connection at Manchester Victoria proved to be wrong, and it was onto 158784 across the Calder Valley to Leeds - I'm sure the via Bradford services weren't as express as this one was, but I wasn't complaining. By this point it was completely pitch black which led to the first of the three-county firework show started - which seemingly coupled with the fact that Cummins 158s are quite hard to be beaten for sound, stopped me from dropping off  by this point, my iPod was also running low on power, which I'd been using quite frequently throughout the day to help me revise for my car theory test.

At Leeds, things were finally going well - I wasn't getting stranded here or having to return on a Pacer, and it was onto the dreaded last semi-fast of the day...fortunately Cummins engined 158910. As usual, this was ridiculously rowdy as far as Barnsley where it became silent, and after being delayed slightly at Meadowhall (and the guard falling onto the unit!), it was into Sheffield, and to the tram home.

To my dismay, this turned up on time...and empty?! With After Dark taking place at Arena, I was expecting this to be quite busy, being the first connection to Halfway as part of the event started to wind down, but no complaints, as still-rather-shiny-tram 118 was taking me home, to end what was quite a good day, with a decent amount of new track coverage included!

That looked like a good day out, enjoyed reading it.
One question: Why do some 158s have Perkins engines in them then? Were they built with them? I worked on lorries when I was much much younger and back then (thinking about it probably around the time 158s were being built) Cummins were pretty much the best with Perkins a bit (although not loads) behind them.

Sounded like a good day trip covering a bit of new track using the £10 rover.

The Sheffield- York seems to throw up all sorts of units (I've had a 144, a 142, 158 and even a 153 on it)

Sounds like a fun day there! While you were out and about on Northern's territory, I was on yours with a large supertram fest.

158815-158862 were built with Perkins engines rather than Cummins ones, not too sure on the reasoning why though.

I'm amazed you still need track up there, especially with the relatively local bit you scored from Moorthorpe! Mind you, now I've said that I've got myself into some nostalgia (not helped by my brother playing some classic tunes on Spotify!) as well as getting into TPP Mode...

Quite the good day you had, apart from the failure to keep your technology going! Whether I'd prefer a Northern 150 to a Northern 156 mind, that's a challenging one. I don't remember much of the Colne branch as I did it in February 2011. Memory tells me it was dark when I did it too.

Good thing you flagged the Tesco trip too, as it isn't all at ground level so your 8 minutes would have been wasted!

Good read there TC60054, I agree with you about the Colne branch as I found it quiet an enjoyable stretch of track with some interesting stations and the request stop along there. I can't remember the last time I had to stick my hand out to stop a train.

I've still to do the Wigan to Southport stretch of line myself and I live in Manchester.

Looking forward to your next report.

The 150 vs 156 is an easy one for me, same with 142 vs 150

The route up from Moorthorpe I still needed being only twice-daily and not actually covered by any day rangers, although that clears I think all of the passenger track that could easily be classed as local now.

I'm not currently too sure on what this weekend will specifically entail, although track I need on Northern now is:

- Silverdale - Barrow in Furness - Workington

- Carlisle to Prudhoe

- Middlesborough - Nunthorpe - Whitby

- Darlington - Bishop Auckland

- Newcastle - Chathill (and obviously ECML north!)

- Long Preston - Carnforth

- Lancaster - Morcambe - Heysham Port

- Kirkham & Wesham - B'pool South

- Blackburn - Clitheroe - Hellifield

- Stockport - Guide Bridge

- York - Harrogate

I think a day up in the North East is in the planning stages for late December, along with Stockport to Stalybridge, although most of the larger chunks of line would be much easier if the S&C was to reopen

EDIT - Forgot a few bits of track [emoji23]

It's been almost a month since my last report

After three weeks of unluckiness with regards to actually trying to win something, getting detrained off a tram in Nottingham, and two departures reported as Full and Standing from Sheffield, I was rather surprised on Thursday when required 142018 turned up mid-tram bash - of course I couldn't resist doing it - but that is completely besides the point

Yesterday was time for my first proper West Yorkshire Day Ranger of the year...it's only December :D

The day started with a very busy tram 125 forwards to Sheffield Station. How I much prefer the 0836 to the 0855  Whilst on the tram, I came across a message on Twitter that the northbound line was blocked at Meadowhall - c**k!!!!

With not knowing whether my chosen train to Wakefield would even be running, I bought my ticket from the TVM at Sheffield only to notice that the 0921 Glasgow was showing as "Delayed" and the 0915 Leeds all shacks was being held for a late running 0847 Newcastle (I don't like getting the Leeds semi-fasts for a WYDR as it means having to buy the ranger from the guard at Wakefield, which is nothing short of a farce sometimes  )

Of course, I hopped onto the 0915 Leeds, which was formed of dud 158792. This was a low mileage one, so I wasn't too fussed, as we weaved our way past the tram depot (399201s had another accident, and there's only four of the seven outside at the moment!) and onto the Tinsley line. I decided to check my connection at Wakefield Westgate, and it didn't look good - but on the plus side my CrossCountry had been cancelled, so it was probably a good thing I did get on this 158!

Eventually reaching Wakefield half an hour later than planned, I now had 25 minutes here - so used the opportunity to buy the ranger (and confuse the poor lass in the booking office who didn't know there was a train-only version of the WYDR!) and get some breakfast from Subway, before boarding dud 153317. I intended to take this the full way to Wakefield, as connections mid route were awful, but after arriving into Mirfield five minutes early, I decided to bail here. During the decision to bail here, I realised that in order to actually win something today, I'd be best off visiting a couple of new shacks (I don't shack scratch, honest!) - and at least this new station had a decent connection too! After photographing a couple of passing 185s, it was onto dud 158872 through to another winning shack, Dewsbury (honestly, I don't shack scratch!). From here, a rather beefy sounding 185130 was taken through to Leeds.

At this point I didn't know what to do. I felt like going past Neville Hill to a required East Garforth on the Selby service, but this turned up 10 minutes late so I gave the idea a miss, and hopped onto 185148 through to Huddersfield, and after boarding realised that this journey just tips it over 300 miles.

There was method to my madness here - the Liverpool via Man Picc service connects onto the Leeds via Bradford service at Huddersfield, which amazingly actually had some required track on it. At Huddersfield, the job of this was taken on by 155343 through to the next new shack, Halifax.

Whilst on here, I decided to check with a mate if there was some winning units out and about, on top of the required 142 which I already knew of (sadly, about 10 minutes infront of my train from Halifax! )

Having formulated a quick plan, it was a quick cross platform connection onto dud 144021 across to the next shack, Brighouse. The connection here was awful, but I was dying for a drink (and didn't fancy paying railway station prices!), so decided to use the 25 minute connection to walk into Brighouse town centre to the Sainsburys. It was during this walk that I realised that shack scratching wasn't as bad as I thought it was - although that's probably something to do with never having officially done it before

Back at the station, I was annoyed at my connection - expecting this to be a winner, I wasn't pleased at the sight of dud 158793 turning up, although was slightly more pleased that winner 155342 was tagging along on the back. This was taken through to Hebden Bridge (note, dud :D ), where I had a choice of two trains through to Leeds for an awful connection there.

In the end, I decided to give 150203+150142 a miss, and took dud 158755 through to Bradford, and took a 20 minute lunch break before boarding 158757 through to Leeds. A quick cross over to platform 17, and it was now the turn of winner 155344 through to another new shack of Castleford. Although this was a very busy train, I wasn't entirely too bothered - I've just cleared my 155s after all! From Castleford, it was back to Leeds on heap 150138. At Leeds, I had a very risky +4 in my plan, but as it was booked for a cross-platform connection, I decided to include it. After being held outside Leeds for a good few minutes, I was nervous but made the connection onto dud 144023 through to Batley comfortably.

The connection here wasn't as long as planned, and after waiting for a couple of minutes dud 153331 rolled in, with winner 142012 tagged on the back - excellent, don't even need to sit in it!:lol:

Back at Leeds, and this was where the running began - onto 333010 through to brand new station (in more than one way!) Kirkstall Forge - and what a pleasant looking station too! It was the job of 333004 to take me back to Leeds after a short 15 minute wait, and then another run onto 333005. This would prove to be an irritating move, taking me through to Bradford Forster Square, and then again through to my final new station, Crossflatts.

The train back from here was annoyingly late, but sure enough 333003 rolled in to take me back to Leeds, where it was now the job to try and get home.

The steed for this was low-mileage 158797 although I was pleasantly displeased when I realised how busy the train was - 1L97 is never like this! Thinking I'd be travelling Luggage Rack class in the front carriage, I thankfully found a free two seats. Sadly I'd forgotten my earphones today, so had to put up with the rowdiness of the train through to Barnsley where it inevitably quietened off, and I had some peace through to Sheffield (note - my thumb has just died whilst typing this :oops:)

The tram home was a decent enough wait, and sure enough 116 turned up to take me home - on time?!

Looks like a very good day in my local area.
Coincidently, I was out and about in South Yorkshire on Saturday.
That shack scratching bug is very easy to pick up :)

A warm welcome to the shack scratchers club! :D

A rather decent day had there, made me envious and want to do a West Yorkshire bash asap!

Thanks all.

I'm not a shack scratcher, honest! Maybe something on the side for when I inevitably get bored though... :D
Side note - it was actually pretty fun. I didn't think it'd be so fun in December on your own :D

No idea when my next trip report will be though, and owing to SYPTE's rather s***e funding of services over the next few weeks there won't be much left - there's not a lot you can do in a day and then be back at Sheffield Station for the last tram home at 1820 :(
Last bus is at 1725 unless I fancy a 20 minute walk so that's also out of the picture

EDIT - it's also important to note that the trams finish three hours later than the buses do on Boxing Day. Talk about an integrated, fully functional transport system

For a major city centre, that's an incredibly early last tram! My last bus home, and I live in the sticks, is 1815 which sucks so I feel for you!

Also, expect a PM by the weekend regarding 19th December...

Bizarre move by Supertram to be so early, but hey ho.

Reminds me that my evening bus times wildly fluctuate. 4bph on weekday evenings with a last bus at 2325, Saturdays is 4bph with last one at 2235, and Sundays is 1bph, last at 2318

In fairness, 1820 is about usual for the last tram on Xmas Eve and NY Eve in Sheffield now - indeed a few years ago last departures from City were around 1730 so it's progressively getting better, as is our Boxing Day service. It's just a shame we can't have a proper service like is being provided in other cities - take Nottingham for example which has an extended service NYE! Both services are commercial too, the logic escapes me...

As I'm sure at least rg177 is aware by my constant ranting about my bus service, it's incredibly terrible at the best of times, so a 1725 last departure was to be expected (1655 last year!). Last bus is 2325 all week but whether it turns up is a completely different matter (usually doesn't).

Whilst I'm talking about the buses, 20 minute service weekdays, 30 minute Saturdays, hourly Sundays, although weekdays you'll be lucky if a bus turns up, even more so if it turns up on time :D even with the 22 year old timetable and constant late running because of that on Supertram, it's still more reliable than the bus

Oh, the memories of 2014 where the last bus City to Birley was 1715 on 24/12 and the next bus City to Birley was 1635 on 31/12... :D

Ah you meant Christmas Eve, makes sense now.

I think the last Salisbury on that day is the 21:27ish starting from Clapham Junction, with the stoppers only running as far as Basingstoke due to engineering works

Our last train will have already left Sheffield by that point :lol: (think its the 2038 Nottingham, if not it's the 2138)

Well, because I've now only got one more trip out left for this year (other than the numerous "I'm bored lets get on a tram" trips), I may as well make a post here that I've now completed another of my 2016 targets - it only took 349 days and about 3000 miles to do it!!

As I don't think I've posted this on here, here's the list of what they were:

  • Clear Northern Pacers
    Clear Northern 158s
    Clear TPE's fleet.
Clear each Supertram for 100 all time miles.
Stop putting Midland Metro off and actually visit the bloody network
    Clear Stockport - Stalybridge
    Win 100 units
    Cover 12,000 miles.

Now I'm most impressed this time, here's the results in the order that they're in above

  • Still need 2 of these.
Done this, 158753 was the last.
Done this also, 350408/350409 last 350s and 185138 last 185
Done this yesterday - considering that I made this target before 118s smash, I wasn't actually expecting to complete this one!!
    Done this - 31st August.
    Doing this in a fortnight.
    Errrr...204 units
    Currently almost at 15,000

Next year's going to be difficult then...

Side note - most of this year's targets are the same as last year's

Okay, so I will confess that two of these are still not completed, but due to family issues I wasn't able to do the planned Stockport to Stalybridge trip on Friday...

------

31/12/2016
It's here! The end of year bash returns...well, I say returns, the 2014 and 2015 ones never went ahead as planned for various different reasons, and it was looking as though this year's wouldn't go ahead either, but thanks to some fortunate rostering at a mate's work, on Monday after dishing out the bad news that I wouldn't be able to attend the Friday trip out, the go ahead was given for what ended up being the best South Pennines DR that I've probably ever done.

Leaving the house at 0804 for the 0815 tram, I made it to the stop to find it...empty?? Now, I'd usually go for the 0836 tram whilst working for a SPDR, however this would be my last light rail move of the year and I didn't want mega mile tram 114 to have these honours - although I should've just left it as stalker 106 rocked up at 0813, also strangely quiet.

Since I was running 40 minutes too early for the 0911 TPE when we finally arrived at the station just before 0830, I decided to head over to Meadowhall to meet my mate, and pick the TPE up from there. Ticket purchased, drinks purchased from Superdrug, and it was onto the platform at 0836. My aim was to get the Huddersfield service, but I thought that I'd have missed this, but fortunately it was awaiting the arrival of what would form the 0841 Bridlington. Checking the unit and hopping on, I was very surprised when 150133 which was taking me forwards to Meadowhall was actually a winner - today wasn't supposed to be getting as many winners as possible, but if this would be the form that the day would take then it has my blessing!

We arrived into Meadowhall, and I made my way over to platform 1 for the 0901 Manchester. To our surprise, the unit appeared around the corner under the M1 bridge at 0858 - I must admit I don't think I've seen a TPE turn up so early at Meadowhall before  This was mega dud unit 185134, although as I discovered as we set off towards Sheffield, this journey would now take the unit past 500 miles - not bad going! We were delayed for a good six or seven minutes at Sheffield for a late running CrossCountry service, but the Cleethorpes crew wasn't hanging around, and we finally pulled into Stockport just three minutes behind schedule, where it was onto winner 175111 forwards to Manchester.

At Manchester, and we'd arrived at an awkward time, with the reduced service along the TP Core, so winner 390039 was taken back towards Stockport on the 1015 Euston, with winner 390122 taking us back to Manchester. From here it was back onto the proper units, with 185142 taking us through to Leeds on the 1057 Middlesbrough - sadly this was rather busy and I didn't actually manage to get a seat (well, I did, but it was reserved and someone had taken the reservation label out of it  ).

I wasn't too looking forwards to the trip across the Pennines, as usually I'd just head somewhere else on a 185, but on this occasion I wasn't on my own so it wasn't just my say  Dud 91116 was taken through to Wakefield, where a quick run over the footbridge led us onto dud 142065 back to Leeds. From here, a quick PNB and then it was onto dud 144006 across to Dewsbury, where a decent connection led to dud 185146 back to Leeds - by which point this was seeming more like the usual day out for me

185101 was our next move, across to Huddersfield, where I had the brainwave of the short connection onto the Manchester all stations, although this was mainly because it was a 156+150 combo, and I need a few too many of both of these  Sadly, no dice here, as I found that both units were dud as we settled down on 156427/150138 on the short hop to Slaithwaite.

My luck changed here, as we crossed under the bridge, and awaited the next unit - winner 156483 was taking us back to Huddersfield, from where it was back to Leeds on dud 185147. This trip was becoming unusually lucky for me, as winner 150274 took us forwards to Batley on a Manchester Victoria all shacks, with dud 155341 returning us to Leeds a short while later.

I should point out at this point that whilst I was dropping units here there and everywhere, the two guys that I was with were winning, well, everything, although this does mean that the stuff that we sighted that I did need meant we actually got on it as they couldn't really argue with me about it

The plan here was for them to do a Huddersfield leap, to win 185150, however disaster occurred as the points failed at Northallerton. A quick change of plans later, and it was onto dud 321902 to Wakefield, where double duds 220005/220034 deposited us back at Leeds, and then it was back to Manchester on 185136.

Now, I'm not a fan of Pendolinos (don't ask why as I can't tell you, I'm just not keen on them), but as it was my best chance of winning something else (plus the other two seemed to love them somehow!), it was winner 390126 back to Stockport, for 185138 back to Manchester - although when we got on this I realised that this was a bad idea as we'd end up on this same unit again later

Dud 142048 was next across to Stockport, with dud 323228 back to Manchester, arriving back at 1954.

As we needed to get back to Meadowhall (and there was a stupid hour and half gap between trains from Sheffield), and I wanted to relive my childhood by getting a 158 out of the trainshed at Piccadilly, we had a bit of a rest here, putting the world to rights in the pub upstairs (sadly I'm a bit too young to drink though!) until the departure of 1L18 back to Sheffield, which were double duds 158857/158852. I've got to admit, for a Perkins engined duo, and 1L18 for that matter, I don't think that working has done so well across the Hope Valley whilst I've been relying on it, arriving back to Sheffield two minutes early. This meant that the day was at a close - and what a better way to send the year out than having 185135/185138 the short distance over to Meadowhall.

Well, there was no better way. It was absolutely amazing :D

An excellent end to the year, and that video I haven't watched yet but you certainly waxed lyrical about it on Twitter! Hopefully I'll get round to watching the video soon.

You certainly did well all in yesterday, and I started my year excellently! Never had a 158 over the Hope Valley, but the only good way to do it is on an HST!

It's a mates video but is similar to what's on my phone albeit with better quality sound

Nah, 185 is the proper way to do it...

Advantages of being an old git, maybe, but a Class 40 + Mark 1s on an ADEX beats either...<D

I agree with Roebuck :)

An excellent day out.
Not for the first time you were in my local area whilst I was in yours!
