It's been almost a month since my last report
After three weeks of unluckiness with regards to actually trying to win something, getting detrained off a tram in Nottingham, and two departures reported as Full and Standing from Sheffield, I was rather surprised on Thursday when required
142018 turned up mid-tram bash - of course I couldn't resist doing it - but that is
completely besides the point
Yesterday was time for my first proper West Yorkshire Day Ranger of the year...it's only December
The day started with a very busy tram
125 forwards to Sheffield Station. How I much prefer the 0836 to the 0855

Whilst on the tram, I came across a message on Twitter that the northbound line was blocked at Meadowhall - c**k!!!!
With not knowing whether my chosen train to Wakefield would even be running, I bought my ticket from the TVM at Sheffield only to notice that the 0921 Glasgow was showing as "Delayed" and the 0915 Leeds all shacks was being held for a late running 0847 Newcastle (I don't like getting the Leeds semi-fasts for a WYDR as it means having to buy the ranger from the guard at Wakefield, which is nothing short of a farce sometimes  )
Of course, I hopped onto the 0915 Leeds, which was formed of dud
158792. This was a low mileage one, so I wasn't too fussed, as we weaved our way past the tram depot (399201s had another accident, and there's only four of the seven outside at the moment!) and onto the Tinsley line. I decided to check my connection at Wakefield Westgate, and it didn't look good - but on the plus side my CrossCountry had been cancelled, so it was probably a good thing I did get on this 158!
Eventually reaching Wakefield half an hour later than planned, I now had 25 minutes here - so used the opportunity to buy the ranger (and confuse the poor lass in the booking office who didn't know there was a train-only version of the WYDR!) and get some breakfast from Subway, before boarding dud
153317. I intended to take this the full way to Wakefield, as connections mid route were awful, but after arriving into
Mirfield five minutes early, I decided to bail here. During the decision to bail here, I realised that in order to actually win something today, I'd be best off visiting a couple of new shacks (I don't shack scratch, honest!) - and at least this new station had a decent connection too! After photographing a couple of passing 185s, it was onto dud
158872 through to another winning shack,
Dewsbury (honestly, I don't shack scratch!). From here, a rather beefy sounding
185130 was taken through to Leeds.
At this point I didn't know what to do. I felt like going past Neville Hill to a required East Garforth on the Selby service, but this turned up 10 minutes late so I gave the idea a miss, and hopped onto
185148 through to Huddersfield, and after boarding realised that this journey just tips it over 300 miles.
There was method to my madness here - the Liverpool via Man Picc service connects onto the Leeds via Bradford service at Huddersfield, which amazingly actually had some required track on it. At Huddersfield, the job of this was taken on by
155343 through to the next new shack,
Halifax.
Whilst on here, I decided to check with a mate if there was some winning units out and about, on top of the required 142 which I already knew of (sadly, about 10 minutes infront of my train from Halifax! )
Having formulated a quick plan, it was a quick cross platform connection onto dud
144021 across to the next shack,
Brighouse. The connection here was awful, but I was dying for a drink (and didn't fancy paying railway station prices!), so decided to use the 25 minute connection to walk into Brighouse town centre to the Sainsburys. It was during this walk that I realised that shack scratching wasn't as bad as I thought it was - although that's probably something to do with never having officially done it before
Back at the station, I was annoyed at my connection - expecting this to be a winner, I wasn't pleased at the sight of dud
158793 turning up, although was slightly more pleased that winner
155342 was tagging along on the back. This was taken through to Hebden Bridge (note, dud

), where I had a choice of two trains through to Leeds for an awful connection there.
In the end, I decided to give 150203+150142 a miss, and took dud
158755 through to Bradford, and took a 20 minute lunch break before boarding
158757 through to Leeds. A quick cross over to platform 17, and it was now the turn of winner
155344 through to another new shack of
Castleford. Although this was a very busy train, I wasn't entirely too bothered - I've just cleared my 155s after all! From Castleford, it was back to Leeds on heap
150138. At Leeds, I had a very risky +4 in my plan, but as it was booked for a cross-platform connection, I decided to include it. After being held outside Leeds for a good few minutes, I was nervous but made the connection onto dud
144023 through to Batley comfortably.
The connection here wasn't as long as planned, and after waiting for a couple of minutes dud
153331 rolled in, with winner
142012 tagged on the back - excellent, don't even need to sit in it!

Back at Leeds, and this was where the running began - onto
333010 through to brand new station (in more than one way!)
Kirkstall Forge - and what a pleasant looking station too! It was the job of
333004 to take me back to Leeds after a short 15 minute wait, and then another run onto
333005. This would prove to be an irritating move, taking me through to Bradford Forster Square, and then again through to my final new station,
Crossflatts.
The train back from here was annoyingly late, but sure enough
333003 rolled in to take me back to Leeds, where it was now the job to try and get home.
The steed for this was low-mileage
158797 although I was pleasantly displeased when I realised how busy the train was - 1L97 is never like this! Thinking I'd be travelling Luggage Rack class in the front carriage, I thankfully found a free two seats. Sadly I'd forgotten my earphones today, so had to put up with the rowdiness of the train through to Barnsley where it inevitably quietened off, and I had some peace through to Sheffield (note - my thumb has just died whilst typing this

)
The tram home was a decent enough wait, and sure enough
116 turned up to take me home - on time?!
