I'm not a Londoner, but I was under the impression that you can reduce the Oyster daily price cap by adding a railcard discount. Does anyone know if the 1-6 daily price cap with a railcard and the discounted 1-6 travelcard will be in the same ratio as the new undiscounted differential (or just be affected by the 5p increments)?

I dread the idea that the cheapest one-day option is Oyster. Not good for people like myself who only visit a few times a year for one day!!!

I would expect the discount to remain at 34%, yes. And don't forget that with Oyster if you only use zones 1-2 or 1-4 then you get a fully discounted cap on the cheaper caps which are not available in paper form at all.

:o Of course! I'd forgotten about that! Since I've never needed the zone 5 or 6 parts at all, I'm essentially now going to be wasting money every time!

I'll probably have to give in and get an Oyster soon or late :'( I'll just have to decide whether the difference between the 1-4 discounted price cap (I always visit on a Saturday) and the discounted 1-6 travelcard is worth the extra for the paper!

Off-Peak Zones 1-4 discounted daily price cap: £5.10
Off-Peak One Day Zones 1-6 discounted Travelcard: £5.60, presumably £5.85 (66% x £8.90 rounded to nearest 5p) from 2nd Jan 13. The refundable Oyster deposit is £5 which would cover its costs with 7 of these price caps.

I wonder if the millions of foreign tourists and visitors that come to London each year are ever considered when they think about the use of the Oyster system?

The map posted appears to be an older one when it was thought SHS would be in Zone 2.

Well, I can manage 75p a time... for now. :)

Thanks a lot. I won't have to get one in 2013 after all!

I once had an overcharge due to being in the system too long. The helpdesk were happy to refund and I used the excuse of bumping into a friend and having a coffee.

I still maintain that the level of fare increase could be reduced if they re-introduced childrens bus fares, if not completely then at least outside of school hours. TFL publicly stated that the objective of free bus travel for children was to reduce the amount of school run traffic, fine, I don't have a problem with that, but I fail to see why children should be entitled to ride around on the bus for nothing in the evenings, at weekends, and during school holidays. Free travel should be restricted to 7.00am-5.00pm on school days only.

That was one of the objectives - but certainly not the only one.

TfL said "the scheme will ... help hundreds of thousands of families in London by improving young people's access to education, sport and leisure".

It was an election objective of Ken Livingstone in 2004, who said; "Free bus and tram travel will encourage young people to use public transport, helping to continue London's move away from car journeys.

Thing is that when I wrote to tfl with my objections to free travel I pointed out that it would not encourage kids to walk and get any exercise if they could simply hop on the bus for nothing for two or three stops. And sure enough within a few years of the scheme starting there were reports of increasing problems of childhood obesity and a big publicity campaign aimed at encouraging children to WALK to school!
Leaving that aside, my point still stands as to how much revenue could be raised by charging them the kids fare outside of school hours, and I still don't see why we should be paying so that they can get the bus and go roaming around London or go to the pictures etc for nothing, especially during the school holidays

Also it's got Surrey Canal Road, which now won't be built for a few years yet.

In fact you can see from the glimpse of Ladbroke Grove in the corner that the map is at least three years out of date—the Circle line doesn't serve it.

There's no point in writing to TfL, (as I said before) it's a political decision...

Indeed, Ken put in place that scheme which no future Mayor of London will dare remove as it'll make them look bad personally and politically.

It's easier to remove articulated buses and raise fares than to remove the under 19's free bus travel within the capital.

You'll have noted in the link I posted above that at the time they were introduced, "80 per cent of Londoners support free fares for under-18s in full-time education."

Don't forget that the cap applies from 0430 to 0430. A day travelcard can be valid for 28.5 hours - from 0001 to 0429 on the second day. That could be worth an extra 50p or 75p to some people <D
